The stillness in the small hospital room was total, save for the rhythmic, metallic beeping of Emily’s heart monitor.
The Prescotts stood framed in the doorway like a portrait of generational wealth—sleek, untouchable, and entirely convinced that the world bent to their lineage. Margaret Prescott smoothed the sleeve of her silk blazer with two fingers, a gesture so casual it made my stomach turn. Ethan tapped his foot on the linoleum floor, checking an heirloom gold watch, while Brandon leaned against the doorframe with a smirking entitlement born of never having faced a single consequence in his thirty-four years of life.
They saw an exhausted officer in a dress uniform. They saw a mother grieving her daughter's pain. They assumed I was trapped by the same social rules, legal maneuvers, and quiet threats that they used to control everyone else.
