I slipped out of the ballroom quietly, wanting to use the restroom before making my early exit to celebrate my graduation alone.
I was washing my hands in the luxurious marble sink when the heavy wooden door swung open violently, hitting the wall with a loud bang.
Olivia stormed in, her massive white dress rustling aggressively as she marched straight toward me with murder in her eyes.
“You did this on purpose, Maya!” she shrieked, pointing a shaking finger perfectly manicured with French tips right at my face.
“You waited until my wedding day to announce your stupid job just to steal my spotlight and humiliate Dad!”
I calmly reached for a paper towel, dried my hands with deliberate slowness, and turned to face her reflection in the mirror.
“I didn't make an announcement to the crowd, Olivia, I simply answered Dad’s threat with the truth in a private conversation.”
“You’re a selfish liar!” she screamed, stepping closer until I could smell the sharp, expensive perfume wafting off her skin.
“Dad told Julian’s parents that he paid for your entire college education, and now they think our family is completely broke because you cut him off!”
I turned around, leaning my hips against the cool marble counter, finally understanding the true depth of my father’s pathetic deception.
“He didn't pay for anything, Olivia, and if Julian’s family is judging him, it’s because his construction business is severely over-leveraged.”
Olivia’s face dropped, the aggressive anger suddenly replaced by a brief, terrified flash of vulnerability that she quickly tried to hide.
“You don't know anything about Dad’s business or Julian’s finances,” she stammered, crossing her arms defensively over her chest.
“I know enough to see that your brand-new husband looks like a hostage who just realized his ransom isn't going to be paid.”
