I had wondered about the jeweler until our investigator obtained a copy of the sales invoice.

The purchase was a diamond bracelet costing $9,600.

It had not been bought for me.

The recipient listed on the delivery confirmation was Vanessa Cole, a broker who had helped arrange the Hawthorne purchase.

Eleanor had not been the only person helping Liam.

But the second signature on the final loan amendment did not belong to Vanessa.

It belonged to Rosa.

When Rosa saw her name, she covered her mouth.

“I didn’t sign that,” she whispered.

Everyone turned toward her.

The amendment identified Rosa Delgado as an independent witness who had supposedly watched me sign the personal guarantee in our penthouse.

Her address and phone number were accurate.

The signature was not.

Rosa began to shake.

“Mr.Liam asked for a copy of my identification last winter,” she said.

“He told me the building needed it for employee records.”

Liam stared at her.

“Be careful, Rosa. You’re confused.”

Her fear changed into anger.

“No. You told me my job could be reviewed if I did not give you the copy.”

The officer asked her to step into the hallway and provide a separate statement.

Liam watched her go, and I saw him calculating again.

He was trying to decide which lie could still save him.

He chose the one he had used throughout our marriage.

He blamed me.

“This happened because you never treated me like an equal,” he said.

“You controlled everything. The apartment, the accounts, the investments. Every time I wanted to build something, you made me feel small.”

“So you stole my identity?”

“I built an asset for us.”

“You sent the income to your mother.”

“Temporarily.”

“You bought another woman a diamond bracelet.”

His face changed.

Eleanor closed her eyes for half a second.

She had known about the property, the forged guarantee, and the diverted rent.

The bracelet appeared to be new information.

“What woman?” she asked.

Liam ignored her.

I removed the jeweler’s invoice and placed it on the counter.

Eleanor snatched it before the officer could stop her.

She read Vanessa’s name twice.

“You said that money paid the insurance premium.”

“Mother, not now.”

“You used my account to buy this?”

Their alliance cracked in front of us.

Eleanor had helped Liam deceive me because she believed the scheme would enrich both of them.

She had not expected to discover that he had also been deceiving her.

“Tell them the truth,” she said.

Liam’s head turned sharply.

“What truth?”
