Maya looked at the table.

“So she didn't like me?”

“I don't know if she disliked you.”

“She cut my hair.”

“I know.”

“Because she thought it was ugly?”

I reached for her hand.

“Your hair is beautiful.”

“Even now?”

“Especially now.”

She gave me a skeptical look.

I smiled.

“Okay. Right now it's a little… experimental.”

She laughed.

It was small.

But it was the first laugh I'd heard from her since I came home.

I smiled.

“Your aunt Renee can help.”

“Can she fix it?”

“She's going to try.”

“Can you fix it?”

I pretended to be offended.

“I could.”

“You don't know how.”

“I watched three videos yesterday.”

“Dad.”

“What?”

“You watched those videos at two in the morning.”

“How do you know?”

“Because I woke up.”

I laughed.

“Okay. Maybe Aunt Renee.”

That evening, Renee came over.

She saw Maya's hair and immediately hugged her.

She didn't ask questions.

She didn't stare.

She simply held her.

Then she opened her styling bag.

“Let's see what we can do.”

Maya sat in front of the mirror.

Renee carefully removed the damaged sections.

Some natural hair had been cut.

Not much.

But enough to make the style uneven.

Maya watched silently.

Finally she asked, “Do we have to cut all of it?”

“No.”

“Are you sure?”

“Absolutely.”

Renee smiled.

“We're not letting one bad decision decide how your hair looks.”

Maya smiled.

Two hours later, she had a shorter braided style.

It wasn't what she had originally chosen.

But it looked beautiful.

Maya stared at herself.

“Really?”

Renee nodded.

“Really.”

Sophie came over.

She saw the hairstyle.

Her mouth fell open.

“That is SO pretty.”

Maya smiled.

“You think?”

“I want mine like that.”

Maya laughed.

And for a moment, the terrible afternoon seemed far away.

But I knew it wasn't over.

The police investigation had only begun.

And the next morning, I would discover that Linda's actions hadn't started that Thursday.

They had been building toward it for months.

The next morning, I received a call from Officer Ruiz.

He wanted to ask me about previous interactions with Linda.

At first, I couldn't think of anything important.

Then I remembered.

The sidewalk chalk.

The basketball.

The trash cans.

The bicycle.

The beads.

The noise.

Every complaint suddenly sounded different.

Officer Ruiz asked, “Has she ever threatened you?”

“Not directly.”

“Has she ever complained about Maya?”

“Several times.”

“About what?”

“Noise. Her hair. Her friends. The way they played.”

He paused.

“Has she ever entered your yard before?”

“Not that I know of.”

“Any cameras?”

“Yes.”

That was when I remembered the rear security camera.

It covered the back gate.

I pulled up the footage.

At first, nothing seemed unusual.

Then I found Thursday afternoon.

4:12 p.m.

Linda came out of her house.

She was carrying the orange gardening shears.

She looked toward my driveway.

Then toward the street.

Then toward my backyard.

She walked to the gate.

She didn't simply open it.

She checked the latch first.

She looked around again.

Then she entered.

I stared at the screen.

“She knew I wasn't home.”

Officer Ruiz nodded.

“That appears to be the case.”

The video didn't show what happened inside because the camera angle was limited.

But it showed enough.

Linda had checked whether anyone was watching.

That changed the story.

This wasn't simply an impulsive reaction to noise.

She had decided to go into my yard.

She had taken tools with her.

And she had done it while believing I wasn't there.

Officer Ruiz asked me to preserve the original footage.

“I'll need a copy.”

“You'll have it.”

Then something else happened.

One of my neighbors, Mrs. Harris, came to my door.

She looked uncomfortable.

“Anthony, I heard about Maya.”

“Thank you.”

She hesitated.

“I think you should know something.”

“What?”

“Linda talked about her before.”

“How?”

Mrs. Harris sighed.

“She complained about Maya constantly.”

“What did she say?”

“That she was too loud.”

I nodded.

“That part I knew.”

Mrs. Harris looked down.

“She also said Maya's hair was inappropriate.”

I felt my jaw tighten.

“When?”

“Several weeks ago.”

“Did she say anything else?”

Mrs. Harris hesitated.

“She said you needed to control your daughter.”

That phrase again.

Control.

Discipline.

Respect.

Words that Linda apparently used whenever Maya didn't fit the picture she had in her mind.

Then Mrs. Harris gave me something else.

A message.

Linda had sent it to her two days before the incident.

It read:

“If Anthony won't discipline that girl, somebody eventually will.”

I read it twice.

Then a third time.

I handed the phone back.

Mrs. Harris looked embarrassed.

“I didn't know what she meant.”

“I believe you.”

“But now…”

She shook her head.

“I should have said something earlier.”

I couldn't blame her.

People often ignore small things because small things seem harmless.

A complaint.

A comment.

A dirty look.

A message.

A boundary pushed one inch at a time.

Until one day the boundary is gone.

That afternoon, Officer Ruiz called again.

“Anthony, we're going to pursue charges.”

I looked at Maya playing in the backyard.

“Okay.”

“There will probably be a court hearing.”

“I understand.”

“Don't contact Linda.”

“I won't.”

“Don't respond if she contacts you.”

“I won't.”

“Let the process work.”

I looked at my daughter.

“That's what I want.”

I wanted the truth recorded.

Not revenge.

Not humiliation.

Not a public spectacle.

Just the truth.

Linda Caldwell had entered my yard.

She had touched my daughter.

Maya had said no.

Linda had continued.

And now there was evidence.

The hardest conversation happened three nights later.

Maya and I were sitting on the back steps.

The same steps where I had found her crying.

She was holding a small brush.

She had been trying to learn how to maintain her new style herself.

“Dad?”

“Yeah?”

“Can I ask you something?”

“Always.”

“Why didn't Mrs. Caldwell just tell me to go inside?”

I thought about it.
