"Losing you."
She smiled.
"You don't have to be."
"I know."
He wrapped his arms around her.
For a man who had spent his life believing power meant control, Jihan had finally learned something else.
Love was not control.
Love was trust.
The Choice
A year after Zora's arrival in Chicago, the Kong family held an anniversary celebration.
The guest list included business leaders, artists, politicians, and members of Chicago's wealthiest families.
Zora stood beside Jihan in a black evening gown.
She wasn't pretending anymore.
She wasn't trying to look like she belonged.
She knew she did.
A journalist approached.
"Miss Bennett, people say you changed Mr. Kong."
Zora smiled.
"No."
She looked at Jihan.
"I think we changed each other."
The journalist smiled.
"Is it true that you met because you kissed him to escape a dangerous man?"
Zora laughed.
"Unfortunately, yes."
Jihan looked amused.
"That was the worst first date I've ever had."
"It wasn't a date."
"It became one."
The journalist laughed.
For once, the story of the Ice King was not about violence.
It was about transformation.
But not everyone celebrated.
Desang approached his son later that night.
"You have become sentimental."
Jihan didn't react.
"Maybe."
"You have abandoned the old ways."
"I've abandoned what needed to be abandoned."
"And for her?"
Jihan looked at Zora across the room.
"Partly."
Desang shook his head.
"She will always be a weakness."
Jihan's expression hardened.
"No."
He turned back to his father.
"She's the reason I became stronger."
Desang studied him.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Then Desang said something unexpected.
"Your grandfather would have understood."
Jihan froze.
"Is that your way of saying you approve?"
"No."
Desang walked away.
But it was the closest thing to approval Jihan had ever received.
Later, Zora found Jihan alone on the balcony.
"What happened?"
"My father."
"Bad?"
"Complicated."
She smiled.
"Everything with you is complicated."
"True."
She leaned against him.
"Jean?"
"Yes?"
"Do you remember when you told me that your world destroys good things?"
"Yes."
"I don't think that's true anymore."
"Why?"
"Because you're changing your world."
He looked at her.
"With you."
She nodded.
"With me."
He reached into his pocket.
Zora's eyes widened.
"Jean."
He dropped to one knee.
Her hands flew to her mouth.
"I know we started with a lie," he said.
"I know our first kiss was an accident."
"I know my life is complicated."
"And I know you deserve a choice."
He opened the small box.
Inside was a simple diamond ring.
"I don't want to protect you because you're mine."
"I want to stand beside you because you choose me."
Zora's eyes filled with tears.
"Jean..."
"Zora Bennett, will you marry me?"
She laughed through her tears.
"You really took your time."
He blinked.
"Is that a yes?"
She dropped to her knees beside him.
"It's a yes."
She kissed him.
Behind them, fireworks began exploding over the Chicago skyline.
For the first time, Jihan didn't see them as symbols of power.
He saw them as a beginning.
The Life They Chose
Two years later, the Kong Foundation opened its first performing arts center.
It stood in a neighborhood where children had once had nowhere to study music or dance.
Now they had studios.
Libraries.
Scholarships.
Teachers.
A theater.
Zora stood backstage before the opening performance.
She watched a group of young dancers prepare.
One little girl stood alone, trembling.
Zora knelt beside her.
"First performance?"
The girl nodded.
"I'm scared."
Zora smiled.
"Me too."
The girl looked surprised.
"You're scared?"
"Sometimes."
"But you're famous."
Zora laughed.
"Being brave doesn't mean you aren't afraid."
She touched the girl's shoulder.
"It means you dance anyway."
The girl smiled.
Then the music began.
Zora watched her walk onto the stage.
She thought about Georgia.
Mama's tiny house.
The bus.
Forty-seven dollars.
The apartment.
The first kiss.
Jean.
The kidnapping.
The rescue.
The fear.
The impossible love that had somehow survived all of it.
Jihan appeared beside her.
"You ready?"
She nodded.
"You?"
"Never."
She laughed.
"Good."
He held out his hand.
She took it.
Together they walked onto the stage.
The audience rose in applause.
Mama was in the front row.
Deshawn sat beside her.
Jihan's father was there too, sitting quietly near the back.
