"The people."

"Not the work?"

"The people were the work."

He nodded.

Then her phone rang.

Claire looked at the screen.

Her expression changed.

She answered.

"Hello?"

A long pause.

"Yes."

Another pause.

"How bad?"

Ethan saw the color leave her face.

"I'll be there."

She hung up.

"What happened?" he asked.

"An old friend."

"Is he okay?"

"No."

Claire grabbed her bag.

Ethan moved aside.

She stopped.

"Don't ask me to explain."

"I won't."

"Thank you."

She left.

The next morning, Ethan learned from Coach Frank that Claire's former teammate had died.

Not in combat.

At home.

Years after service.

The news hit Claire hard.

She disappeared from Apex for two weeks.

Ethan wanted to call.

But he didn't.

He respected the boundary.

Then one evening, he found a note in his locker.

Thank you for not asking.

No signature.

He knew who it was from.

He kept the note.

 The Challenge

The problem began with a visiting fighter named Marcus Vail.

Marcus was twenty-nine.

Former collegiate wrestler.

Purple belt in jiu-jitsu.

Confident.

Aggressive.

And unfamiliar with Ethan.

During an open mat, Marcus watched Ethan train.

Then he smiled.

"You're the black belt?"

"Yes."

"I heard you were good."

Ethan shrugged.

"I train."

Marcus laughed.

"That's not what I heard."

Claire happened to be nearby.

She immediately recognized the tone.

Ethan looked at Marcus.

"What do you want?"

"A round."

"Sure."

The match began.

Marcus attacked aggressively.

Ethan defended.

The pace increased.

Marcus caught Ethan's arm.

Ethan escaped.

Then Marcus made a mistake.

Ethan took his back.

The room reacted.

Ethan secured the choke.

Marcus tapped.

Ethan released immediately.

"Good round."

Marcus stood.

His pride was bruised.

He muttered something.

Ethan ignored it.

But ten minutes later, Marcus challenged Claire.

"How about you?"

Claire shook her head.

"No."

Marcus laughed.

"Come on."

"No."

"You train here."

"I know."

"Then roll."

Claire looked at him.

"I said no."

Marcus smirked.

"What's wrong?"

Ethan recognized the moment.

It was the same moment he had created months earlier.

He stepped between them.

"She said no."

Marcus looked at him.

"Who asked you?"

"I did."

"Mind your business."

Ethan's voice remained calm.

"It is my business when someone ignores a boundary."

Marcus laughed.

"Since when?"

Ethan looked at Claire.

She nodded once.

Then he turned back.

"Since I learned better."

The room went quiet.

Marcus eventually walked away.

Claire approached Ethan.

"That was a good answer."

He smiled.

"I had a good teacher."

 The Visitor

A month later, a stranger entered Apex.

He was older.

Around fifty.

Gray hair.

Military posture.

He spoke quietly with Coach Frank.

Claire saw him.

She froze.

Ethan noticed.

The man walked toward her.

"Hayes."

Claire's jaw tightened.

"Colonel."

"I heard you were here."

"I am."

"How long?"

"Long enough."

The man glanced at Ethan.

"Friend?"

Claire looked at him.

"Training partner."

Ethan nodded politely.

The colonel turned back to Claire.

"We need you."

Claire shook her head.

"No."

"It's not what you think."

"It never is."

He lowered his voice.

"Three people are missing."

Claire's expression changed.

"Where?"

"Overseas."

"Military?"

"Contractors."

"Medical?"

"One of them."

Claire stared at him.

"Why me?"

"Because the team requested you."

She closed her eyes.

The past had found her again.

Ethan stood nearby but did not interrupt.

Finally Claire said:

"I'm not going back."

The colonel nodded.

"I expected that."

He handed her an envelope.

"You don't have to."

He left.

Claire held the envelope for several seconds.

Ethan approached.

"Do you want me to ask?"

"No."

"Okay."

He started walking away.

Then she called:

"Ethan."

He turned.

"I might be gone for a while."

"Okay."

"Don't let the beginners get lazy."

He smiled.

"I won't."

She smiled too.

Then she left.

 The Empty Mat

Claire was gone for six weeks.

Apex felt different.

Ethan noticed.

He trained harder.

He helped Coach Frank.

He taught beginners.

He even stopped trying to be the center of attention.

But every Thursday, he looked toward the entrance.

No Claire.

Then one evening, a new student walked in.

Young.

Nervous.

About seventeen.

He stood near the wall wearing a brand-new white belt.

Ethan watched him.

The boy looked around.

He seemed intimidated.

Ethan walked over.

"First day?"

The boy nodded.

"I'm Daniel."

"I'm Ethan."

Daniel looked at Ethan's black belt.

"You're a black belt."

"Yeah."

Daniel swallowed.

"Are you going to make me roll?"

Ethan smiled.

"No."

The boy looked surprised.

"Why not?"

"Because you don't have to."

Daniel relaxed.

"You'll roll when you're ready."

Ethan showed him where to put his shoes.

Where to fill his water bottle.

How to tie the belt.

The whole interaction took less than five minutes.

But Coach Frank watched from across the room.

After class, Frank approached Ethan.

"Claire would be proud."

Ethan smiled.

"Don't tell her."

Frank laughed.

"Why?"

"I don't need the praise."

Frank nodded.

"Now you're getting it."

 The Return

Claire returned on a rainy Tuesday evening.

Nobody knew she was coming.

The academy door opened.

She stepped inside carrying a duffel bag.

Ethan was helping a group of beginners practice escapes.

He looked up.

Their eyes met.

For a moment, neither moved.

Then Ethan smiled.

"You're back."

Claire nodded.

"Looks like it."

He walked toward her.

"How was it?"

"Complicated."

"You okay?"

She considered the question.

"Better."

That was enough.

Ethan pointed toward the mat.

"Want to roll?"

Claire smiled.

"You're still asking?"

"Always."

She placed her bag down.

"All right."

They stepped onto the mat.

Students gathered around.

Ethan and Claire touched hands.
