Doyle noticed the growing audience. In a neighborhood like Hawthorne Ridge, the police were expected to be swift, decisive, and fully in control of the elements that the taxpayers deemed "undesirable." The fact that Camille was calmly dismantling the officer's authority in front of the residents was an intolerable affront to Doyle's pride.
Her voice became harder, losing the last veneer of professionalism.
"Put your hands behind your back."
Camille didn't move. She didn't flinch. She simply analyzed the command.
"For what?" Camille asked. "Under what specific charge are you placing me under arrest?"
"Obstruction," Doyle spat out, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from her belt. "Now turn around and put your hands behind your back before I force you to."
Camille knew that physically resisting an unlawful arrest on the street was a fatal mistake. The courts were the place to fight, not the concrete. She had precisely what she needed: undeniable, video-recorded proof of a Fourth Amendment violation, executed with zero reasonable suspicion, escalated to a false arrest to protect a fragile ego.
"I am complying with your physical orders under protest," Camille stated loudly and clearly, ensuring the body camera’s microphone picked up every syllable. "I do not consent to this search, and I do not consent to this seizure."
She slowly turned around and placed her hands behind her back.
Doyle stepped in aggressively. She grabbed Camille’s wrists with unnecessary force, ratcheting the cold steel cuffs down tight enough to bite into the skin.
"You should have just handed over your ID," Doyle hissed into Camille’s ear as she pushed her toward the back of the patrol car.
"And you should have remembered your oath to the Constitution," Camille replied smoothly as she bent her head to slide into the molded plastic backseat of the cruiser.
The heavy door slammed shut, sealing Camille in the stifling heat of the squad car. As Doyle walked around to the driver's side, Camille looked out the reinforced window. The residents of Hawthorne Ridge were watching her with expressions of vindicated satisfaction. The system was working exactly as they had designed it to. The threat had been removed.
But as the patrol car pulled away, heading toward the local precinct, Camille leaned her head back against the hard plastic and smiled.
