“You just hit the wrong woman in front of three cameras.”
Harlan's face darkened.
“You threatening me?”
“No.”
“What was that?”
“A statement of fact.”
The Blow
Harlan lifted one hand.
For half a second, Lena thought he was pointing.
Instead, his open palm struck the side of her face.
The impact snapped her head sideways.
The road seemed to go silent.
There was no blood.
No collapse.
Only shock.
A woman beside a stopped SUV gasped.
One highway worker shouted, “Hey!”
Officer Dawson stepped forward.
“Grant!”
Lena steadied herself against the motorcycle.
Her cheek burned.
Her eyes watered reflexively.
She did not shout.
She did not strike back.
She did not reach for Harlan.
She simply straightened.
Harlan's arm remained half raised.
For the briefest moment, surprise crossed his face.
He seemed almost shocked by what he had done.
Then instinct took control.
He needed what everyone had seen to become something else.
“Stop resisting!”
Lena stared at him.
“I’m standing still.”
“You’re interfering with an officer.”
“How?”
“You refused lawful orders.”
“I asked to move my motorcycle safely.”
“You became aggressive.”
A highway worker shouted:
“She wasn’t aggressive!”
Harlan spun around.
“Back up!”
The worker remained where he was.
His phone stayed raised.
Dawson took another step.
“Grant, let’s slow this down.”
But Harlan was no longer listening.
Something had changed.
The encounter was no longer about a motorcycle.
It was about control.
And Lena understood that better than anyone standing on that road.
The Credential
Harlan reached for Lena's wrist.
She pulled her arm back.
“Do not touch me.”
“Turn around.”
“I am requesting your supervisor again.”
“Hands behind your back.”
“For what?”
“You're under arrest.”
The highway worker lowered his phone for a moment in disbelief.
“For what?” he repeated.
Harlan glared at him.
“Do you want to join her?”
Nobody answered.
Lena knew she had only seconds before the situation became more dangerous.
She reached slowly inside her jacket.
Harlan immediately grabbed her arm.
“Hands where I can see them!”
“My identification is inside.”
“Take your hand out.”
Lena stopped.
Then she looked directly at him.
“Officer Harlan, I strongly recommend you allow me to show you my credentials.”
He laughed.
“You've got a badge hidden in there now?”
“No.”
“Then what have you got?”
Lena slowly removed the sealed wallet.
Harlan snatched it.
He opened it.
His expression changed.
The wallet contained an official credential from the Alabama Office of Public Integrity.
Under Lena's photograph were the words:
SPECIAL INVESTIGATIVE COUNSEL
Harlan stared.
Dawson stepped closer.
“What does it say?”
Harlan didn't answer.
Lena extended her hand.
“Give it back.”
He looked at her.
“You’re some kind of investigator?”
“Yes.”
“How high up?”
“High enough that I would advise you to preserve every second of your body-camera recording.”
The color slowly drained from Dawson's face.
Harlan's expression hardened again.
“You think that changes what happened?”
“No.”
Lena touched her cheek.
“It changes who will be reviewing it.”
The Government Sedan
The black sedan parked farther down the shoulder suddenly came alive.
