Gunfire sounded through the radio.

Then the connection went dead.

Claire looked at Nell.

"What is the powder conduit?"

Nell opened Henry's map.

Her finger moved across faded lines.

Then she found it.

"A tunnel Sutter doesn't know exists."

"Where does it lead?"

Nell looked toward the twelve exhausted workers.

"Out."

Getting twelve weakened people through an abandoned mine was not a rescue.

It was a migration.

Every person moved at a different speed.

Two had injuries.

One suffered from asthma.

Another had inhaled enough dust that he could barely walk fifty feet without stopping.

The unconscious worker, whose name was Daniel Ruiz, had regained consciousness but remained confused.

Jonah wanted to carry him.

Nell refused.

"You'll destroy that ankle."

"I don't care."

"You will when you become patient number thirteen."

They built a makeshift stretcher from conduit and canvas.

The group moved upward.

Micah explained what had happened.

Three days earlier, the workers found the contaminated chamber.

Their supervisor ordered them to forget what they had seen.

When an engineer named Priya Patel refused, security arrived.

Everyone was detained.

Sutter demanded the photographs and copied records.

When he discovered someone had removed a flash drive, he became convinced Jonah possessed it.

"He said nobody was leaving until he got it," Micah said.

"Did Calder Vale know?" Claire asked.

Micah hesitated.

"I heard Sutter talking to someone on the phone. He called him 'Mr. Vale.'"

Claire's expression sharpened.

"Could you testify to that?"

"If we survive tonight."

"We're surviving."

Nell said it before anyone else could answer.

The certainty in her voice made several people look at her.

She wasn't sure whether she believed it.

But sometimes leadership meant lending people confidence you had not yet found for yourself.

They reached the old powder conduit at 8:26 p.m.

It was narrow.

Partially flooded.

But open.

"Henry, you beautiful stubborn man," Nell whispered.

Jonah heard her.

"He would've liked this?"

"He would've complained the whole time."

They entered.

Fifteen minutes later, the lights behind them vanished.

Power throughout the mine suddenly shut down.

Darkness swallowed everything.

People panicked.

Nell shouted.

"Nobody moves!"

Headlamps flickered on.

One by one.

"Count!"

The workers called numbers.

One through twelve.

Jonah.

Claire.

Nell.

Fifteen people.

All present.

Then a distant explosion rolled through the mine.

Dust shook from the ceiling.

Someone screamed.

Jonah looked back.

"Sutter?"

Nell listened.

The vibration faded.

"Main shaft."

Claire raised the stolen radio.

Only static.

"They collapsed it."

"So state rescue can't enter," Micah said.

"Correct."

One of the workers began crying quietly.

Nell faced the group.

"Listen to me."

The crying stopped.

"That explosion didn't trap us."

She held up Henry's map.

"It trapped them on the wrong side."

She pointed ahead.

"We keep moving."

The powder conduit rose gradually.

After forty minutes, they reached an old maintenance chamber.

A steel ladder climbed toward a hatch.

Jonah stared upward.

"Where does that come out?"

Nell remembered Henry describing it.

"Mile Marker Nineteen."

Jonah smiled.

"Red Mesa Road?"

"Old drainage station beside it."

Claire climbed first.

She pushed against the hatch.

Nothing.

"Sealed."

Micah joined her.

Together they pushed.

Rust broke.

The hatch opened.

Cold night air rushed inside.

People cheered.

Nell nearly cried.

One at a time, the workers climbed out.

Stars spread across the desert.

For the first time in hours there was open sky above them.

Claire immediately raised her phone.

Signal.

She called federal authorities.

"This is Special Agent Claire Donnelly. I have twelve witnesses alive at Mile Marker Nineteen. Gray Mesa primary shaft has been intentionally collapsed. Armed suspects remain on site."

She listened.

"Yes. Send medical units and tactical support."

Jonah looked at Nell.

"Looks like we made it."

Nell did not answer.

Something was wrong.

She heard an engine.

Fast.

Headlights appeared down the highway.

A pickup.

Then another.

Claire ended the call.

"Those aren't ours."

Jonah stood.

"Get everyone behind the drainage wall."

Vehicles skidded onto the shoulder.

Three men stepped out.

Weapons visible.

Nell recognized one.

Peter Danner.

Blood covered one side of his jacket.

"Don't shoot!" he shouted.

Claire aimed at him.

"Hands where I can see them!"

Peter raised his hands.

The other two men did the same.

"They're mine," he said. "County rescue. They don't work for Vale."

Claire kept her weapon steady.

"What happened underground?"

"Sutter shot me."

"Why should we believe you?"

Peter looked at Nell.

"Because I gave you the conduit."

Nell stared at him.

"You also gave them Jonah's route."

His face collapsed.

"Yes."

"You planted the explosive?"

"No. I told them where the unstable cliffs were. Sutter's men planted it."

"Why?"

Peter swallowed.

"It started with inspection reports. Small things. Vale's people paid me to move dates, delay paperwork."

"Four hundred thousand dollars is a lot of small things."

Peter looked ashamed.

"My daughter needed treatment."

Nell stiffened.

Peter's daughter, Emily.

She remembered a little girl carrying flowers at Henry's funeral.

"She got sick three years ago," Peter said. "Insurance stopped covering part of it. Vale offered help."

"So you sold him the county."

Peter looked down.

"At first, I told myself nobody would get hurt."

Nell's voice cracked like a whip.

"That sentence has buried more people than dynamite."

Peter flinched.

He nodded.

"I know."

Sirens sounded far away.

Claire looked toward the road.

Peter stepped closer.

"Sutter isn't staying at Gray Mesa."

Jonah looked at him.

"Where's he going?"

"He has the original disposal ledgers."

Claire's face changed.

"Where?"

"Vale keeps a private archive at an airfield outside San Inez."

Peter checked his watch.

"Sutter's taking everything there. Plane leaves before midnight."

Claire immediately called her team.

Nell grabbed her arm.

"The workers are safe. Let professionals handle the rest."

Claire nodded.

"Agreed."

Jonah looked relieved.

For the first time all evening, Nell felt finished.

Then Peter said, "There is one problem."

Everyone looked at him.

"What?" Jonah asked.

Peter's gaze moved to Nell.

"Calder Vale is already at the airfield."

Claire frowned.

"How do you know?"

"I heard Sutter call him."

Peter swallowed.

"And Vale knows who rescued the workers."

Nell's stomach tightened.

"He knows you, Nell."

She said nothing.

Peter's next words turned the night cold.

"He sent men to your ranch."

Nell stared at him.

"For what?"

"To find the flash drive."

Jonah reached instinctively toward his jacket.

Then froze.

The flash drive wasn't there.

Nell had hidden it before they left.

In Henry's workshop.

Under the floorboard beneath his workbench.

Her ranch.

Her home.

Henry's things.

Every photograph.

Every letter.

Everything she had left of forty-five years together.

Headlights from the approaching ambulances appeared over a hill.

Claire said, "Nell, don't go back."

But Nell was already walking toward Peter's truck.

Jonah limped after her.

"Nell."

She opened the passenger door.

"You need medical treatment."

"So do you."

"I'm going home."

Jonah stared at her for a second.

Then opened the driver's door.

"No."

"What?"

"You're not driving into whatever's waiting there alone."

"You can barely stand."

"Then I guess I'm riding."

Nell looked at him.

"You're extremely irritating."

"So I've been told."

Claire shouted after them.

"Federal teams are twenty minutes out!"

Nell climbed into the truck.

"We'll try not to finish without you."

Smoke was visible three miles away.

Nell knew before she saw the flames.

Her barn was burning.

Jonah pressed harder on the accelerator.

They reached the property at 10:03 p.m.

Two black SUVs stood beside the house.

Three men searched the workshop.

Another carried boxes outside.

Nell saw Henry's tools dumped into the dirt.

Something inside her became very still.
