“County auction.”
The man's face changed.
“That horse wasn't supposed to be sold.”
Caleb frowned.
“Why?”
The man stared at Ghost.
“Because his name isn't Ghost.”
“What is it?”
The stranger whispered:
“Silver King.”
The Horse With a Past
The stranger introduced himself as Victor Grant.
He claimed Silver King had once been the most valuable cutting horse in the region.
He had won competitions.
He had been worth nearly a quarter million dollars.
Then, three years earlier, he disappeared.
Caleb didn't believe him.
“Why would a horse worth that much end up at an auction?”
Victor looked away.
“Complicated.”
“That usually means someone's lying.”
Victor's face hardened.
“I'll give you ten thousand dollars.”
Caleb laughed.
“You came here expecting to buy him?”
“Yes.”
“No.”
“Twenty thousand.”
“No.”
“Fifty.”
Caleb stepped closer.
“You could offer me a million.”
Victor stared at him.
“Why?”
“Because I don't sell animals that trust me.”
Victor's expression turned cold.
“You don't know what you're dealing with.”
Caleb looked toward Ghost.
“I know exactly what I'm dealing with.”
Victor left.
But that night, Caleb found the pasture gate open.
Ghost was gone.
Emma had heard the truck.
Caleb immediately called the sheriff.
They followed tire tracks into the hills.
Near an abandoned barn, they found Ghost.
He was trapped inside.
Victor stood beside him.
“You should have sold him,” Victor said.
Caleb's anger rose.
“You stole him.”
Victor smiled.
“He belongs to me.”
“No.”
“He was trained under my ranch.”
Caleb looked at Ghost.
The horse was shaking.
Victor held a rope.
Caleb understood.
This was why Ghost feared ropes.
“Let him go.”
Victor laughed.
“You don't understand horses.”
“No,” Caleb said. “You don't.”
Suddenly Emma stepped forward.
She began humming.
Ghost's head lifted.
Victor turned.
“What are you doing?”
She continued singing.
The horse stopped trembling.
Caleb stared.
The melody was the same one Emma's father had sung.
Victor's face went pale.
“You learned that from your father?”
Emma nodded.
“Why?”
Victor said nothing.
Caleb looked at him.
“You know her father?”
Victor remained silent.
Emma stepped closer.
“My father knew this horse, didn't he?”
Victor finally whispered:
“Yes.”
The truth began to emerge.
