“…What is going on?” Julian's voice was a hoarse whisper. "Jane...?"
Eleanor turned back to him. Her expression was no longer soft—now confident, almost untouchable, radiating the immense power of her true identity.
“My name isn't Jane,” she said. The truth hung in the air, heavy and absolute. “I wanted to see if you loved me without knowing who I really am.”
Julian stared at her, his mind struggling to process the visual dissonance of the girl he loved commanding a security detail that looked like it belonged to a head of state.
“And you did,” Eleanor said softly, a genuine warmth briefly breaking through her imperious facade. She looked at him with profound gratitude. “You defended a penniless artist against the world.”
Then, her gaze shifted. She turned slowly to look at Miriam.
“But not everyone passed the test.”
Miriam stood frozen, her confidence completely shattered. Her face was ashen, her eyes darting between the security guards and Eleanor. The arrogant, sneering woman from five minutes ago had evaporated, replaced by someone small and terrified.
“Who… who are you?” Miriam asked quietly, her voice trembling.
Eleanor smiled faintly, a smile devoid of any warmth.
“My family owns half of this district,” Eleanor said, her voice carrying clearly over the hushed street. “Including V-Corp. The company your son works for. The company I will be taking over as CEO next month.”
Silence crashed over the street.
It was absolute and suffocating. Miriam's knees seemed to give way slightly, her shopping bag slipping from her fingers and hitting the pavement with a pathetic thud. She realized, in one horrifying instant, that she had spent the last six months relentlessly insulting, degrading, and threatening the sole heiress to the empire her son depended on. She had tried to destroy the one connection that could have given her everything she ever wanted.
Eleanor didn't offer Miriam another word. She had ceased to matter.
Eleanor turned her attention back to Julian. He was staring at her, shocked. The woman before him was a stranger—a billionaire, a titan of industry. He felt a sudden, crushing sense of vertigo. His whole world had been turned upside down in the span of three minutes.
