He had a deadline.

Linda understood it too.

"That's why he moved tonight."

Richard nodded.

"Once you turn twenty-five, the trust becomes fully active."

Emma stood.

"So if I disappear before tomorrow..."

"Daniel gains control through the emergency clause."

Silence.

Then the clinic lights suddenly went out.

Linda reached for a weapon.

Richard whispered.

"They found us."

A window shattered.

Someone shouted outside.

The doctor screamed.

Emma ran toward the back door.

Linda grabbed her hand.

"Stay with me."

They escaped into the rain.

Behind them, the clinic erupted into chaos.

Cars raced through the darkness.

Men shouted.

Emma ran until her lungs burned.

Finally, they reached a small storage building near the road.

Linda locked the door.

Everyone was breathing heavily.

Richard looked at Emma.

"Tomorrow morning, you must sign nothing."

"Why?"

"Because Daniel will try to make you sign away the trust."

Emma nodded.

Then she looked at her mother.

"I want to know everything."

Linda stared at her.

"Everything?"

"Every lie. Every secret. Every person involved."

Linda took a slow breath.

"Then you need to hear the worst part."

Emma waited.

Linda whispered:

"I wasn't the only person who helped me take you."

Richard's face went pale.

"Who else?"

Linda looked directly at him.

"Your father."

Richard froze.

"My father died before Emily disappeared."

"That's what you were told."

Emma felt her blood run cold.

Linda continued.

"Your father was alive."

And somewhere outside, a car door slammed.

Someone had arrived.

Richard couldn't speak.

His father's death had always been one of the few facts he had never questioned.

Thomas Weston had suffered a heart attack twenty-one years ago.

His funeral had been attended by hundreds of people.

Richard had buried him himself.

Or believed he had.

"You are saying my father survived?"

Linda nodded.

"He disappeared."

"Why?"

"Because he knew what Daniel's father was planning."

Richard sat down.

His face had become gray.

"My father knew Emily was going to be taken."

"Yes."

"And he allowed it?"

"No."

Linda explained that Thomas had secretly contacted her before Emily disappeared.

He believed someone within the family intended to use the child as leverage.

He told Linda that Richard's life was in danger.

Thomas wanted Emily removed temporarily.

But before he could arrange her return, he disappeared.

Linda had continued hiding Emily because she believed the family was compromised.

Richard shook his head.

"Why didn't he come back?"

"Because he was being watched."

"By whom?"

"Daniel's father."

Emma listened.

The story had become larger than she could understand.

She had once believed her life was simple.

Now she was standing in the center of a family war that had begun before she could remember her own name.

Then a phone rang.

Everyone froze.

It was an old phone inside the storage building.

Linda looked at Richard.

"That's impossible."

The phone rang again.

Richard picked it up.

"Hello?"

A man's voice answered.

"Richard."

Richard's face changed.

He knew the voice.

"Father?"

The line went silent.

Then:

"You need to listen carefully."

Richard stood.

"Where are you?"

"Not far."

"Are you alive?"

"I've been alive for twenty years."

Richard closed his eyes.

"Why?"

"Because if I returned, they would kill you."

Emma stepped closer.

The voice continued.

"Emily must not trust Daniel."

"We know."

"No. You don't."

A pause.

"Daniel is not acting alone."

Richard looked at Linda.

"Who is with him?"

The voice said a name.

Richard dropped the phone.

Emma picked it up.

The line was dead.

"What did he say?"

Richard looked at her.

"He said the person helping Daniel is someone we thought was protecting you."

Linda immediately understood.

"The security chief."

Richard nodded.

The man who had been in the mansion.

The man who had brought Emma to Weston House.

The man who had organized the security team.

He had been working for Daniel.

Emma suddenly realized how carefully the trap had been designed.

The luxury car.

The DNA test.

The mansion.

The attack.

Everything had been planned.

Perhaps even the discovery of her identity.

"What do we do now?" she asked.

Richard looked at the clock.

It was nearly midnight.

Emma's birthday was approaching.

"We find my father."

They left the storage building before dawn.

Thomas had arranged a meeting at an abandoned railway station.

Emma, Richard, and Linda arrived shortly before sunrise.

An old man emerged from the shadows.

His hair was white.

His face was deeply lined.

But Richard recognized him.

"Father."

Thomas smiled sadly.

"I wondered if you would forgive me."

Richard embraced him.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Emma stepped forward.

Thomas looked at her.

His eyes filled with tears.

"Emily."

Emma didn't know what to say.

He reached toward her face but stopped before touching her.

"I held you once," he whispered. "You were so small."

Emma finally took his hand.

"Why did you let me disappear?"

"I didn't."

"Then why?"

"Because I believed hiding you was the only way to keep you alive."

He explained the final secret.

The original kidnapping had not been motivated solely by money.

There had been evidence of financial crimes inside the Weston corporation.
