Later, that video would become central to the investigation.

But at that moment, Maya knew only one thing.

She wanted Daniel.

She pulled out her phone.

Harris said, “Who are you calling?”

“My husband.”

“Why?”

“Because I have a right to speak with him.”

Harris sighed.

Maya dialed.

Daniel answered.

“Hey, what's wrong?”

Maya looked at the police officers.

Her voice remained controlled.

“I've been stopped outside Vellori.”

Silence.

“What?”

“They say there's an issue with the bracelet.”

“Are you okay?”

“Yes.”

“Where are you?”

“Minecraft Avenue. Outside Vellori.”

“I'll be there.”

“Daniel—”

“I'm coming.”

He ended the call.

Maya lowered the phone.

Harris said, “You can wait here.”

Maya looked at him.

“I wasn't planning to go anywhere.”

But inside, she was thinking about something else.

Her mother.

The bracelet.

The birthday surprise.

The ordinary afternoon that had somehow become a public spectacle.

She wondered whether Evelyn would ever wear the bracelet.

And then she wondered something more important.

How many other people had stood exactly where she was standing?

How many had been told they were merely being asked questions?

How many had been made to prove they belonged?

And how many had not had someone coming to help them?

Daniel Arrives

Daniel Carter arrived nineteen minutes later.

He stepped out of a dark sedan wearing a navy suit, his tie loosened slightly from the heat.

He saw Maya first.

Then the officers.

Then the crowd.

His expression changed.

Daniel was not a man who shouted.

That was one of the reasons Maya trusted him.

When angry, he became quieter.

He walked toward the officers.

“I'm Daniel Carter. That's my wife.”

Harris immediately stepped forward.

“Sir, we're handling an investigation.”

Daniel looked at Maya.

“Are you okay?”

“Yes.”

“Were you arrested?”

“No.”

“Detained?”

Maya answered.

“They haven't clearly said.”

Daniel looked at Harris.

“Officer, what is the legal basis for holding her?”

Harris stiffened.

“We're investigating a suspected fraudulent transaction.”

“Have you confirmed the payment?”

“We're still investigating.”

“Did you check the receipt?”

“Yes.”

“Did you verify the card authorization?”

“We're doing that.”

Daniel nodded.

“Then what evidence do you have that my wife committed a crime?”

Harris said nothing.

Nolan stepped in.

“We received a complaint from the store.”

“A complaint isn't evidence.”

“No.”

Daniel looked toward Vellori.

“Who made the complaint?”

“Store management.”

“Then let's speak with them.”

Patricia Wells finally came outside.

She approached cautiously.

Daniel looked at her.

“Are you the manager?”

“Yes.”

“I'm Daniel Carter.”

Patricia's face changed.

It was subtle.

But Maya noticed.

Patricia had expected Maya to be alone.

She had not expected anyone to challenge the accusation.

Daniel asked, “What exactly did my wife do?”

Patricia swallowed.

“There was concern regarding the purchase.”

“What concern?”

“The circumstances.”

“What circumstances?”

Patricia looked uncomfortable.

“She arrived without an appointment.”

“That isn't a crime.”

“No.”

“She purchased a bracelet.”

“Yes.”

“The card was approved.”

“Yes.”

“So what exactly is the problem?”

Patricia's silence lasted several seconds.

Finally she said, “Our security protocols require us to investigate unusual transactions.”

Daniel nodded.

“Show me the policy.”

Patricia didn't answer.

“Show me the written policy,” he repeated.

“I don't have it with me.”

“You manage the store.”

“Yes.”

“Then you should know it.”

Patricia looked toward Harris.

Daniel noticed.

“So you called the police before confirming whether the transaction violated your own policy?”

Patricia said, “We had concerns.”

“About what?”

She looked at Maya.

Then at Daniel.

“I don't think this is productive.”

Daniel's voice remained calm.

“I agree.”

He turned toward Harris.

“Officer, my wife is leaving.”

Harris stepped forward.

“Sir—”

Daniel raised a hand.

“Before you continue, I'd like your name and badge number.”

Harris provided them.

Daniel wrote them down.

Nolan did the same.

Daniel looked at both officers.

“My wife will cooperate with any lawful investigation. But she will not remain here indefinitely because a store employee decided her appearance was suspicious.”

Patricia's face reddened.

“That's not what happened.”

Maya finally spoke.

“Then tell the truth about what happened.”

Patricia looked at her.

“You misunderstood me.”

“No.”

Maya's voice was quiet.

“I heard you.”

A few people in the crowd murmured.

The woman filming had moved closer.

Patricia glanced at the phones.

Then at Harris.

Then back at Maya.

Something had changed.

The police were no longer dealing with a frightened customer who could be pushed back inside.

They were dealing with witnesses.

And witnesses changed everything.

Harris finally stepped aside.

“Ms. Carter, you can go.”

Maya looked at him.

“Thank you.”

She turned.

Then stopped.

She looked at Patricia.

“I hope you understand something.”

Patricia said nothing.

Maya continued.

“I didn't come here to prove that I belonged in your store.”

Patricia's eyes narrowed.

“I came here to buy a gift for my mother.”

She touched her handbag.

“And I paid for it.”

Then she walked away.

Daniel followed.
