Every officer became silent.
Victoria straightened.
Then she delivered the words that would change Montgomery forever.
“I am Chief Victoria Washington, Montgomery Police Department.”
Nobody moved.
“I was appointed by federal order. I was sworn in last night.”
Whitmore's face went completely white.
The New Chief
“That’s impossible,” Whitmore whispered.
Victoria reached into her uniform and produced the appointment papers.
She handed them to Morrison.
His hands trembled as he read them.
Victoria continued.
“Chief Morrison was relieved of duty at midnight.”
Morrison stared at her.
“I assume command effective 12:01 this morning under federal oversight.”
Her radio crackled.
Victoria pressed the button.
“Dispatch, this is Chief Washington. Confirm my authority.”
A calm voice answered.
“Confirmed, Chief Washington. Montgomery Police Department is under your command.”
The silence was absolute.
Then the mayor's vehicle arrived.
Mayor Patricia Webb stepped out.
She looked at the assembled officers.
“Allow me to make this official.”
She pointed toward Victoria.
“This is your new chief.”
The civilians erupted.
Some applauded.
Others cheered.
An elderly Black woman began to cry.
Victoria looked at Whitmore.
“You should have verified my credentials.”
Whitmore couldn't answer.
The Badge Comes Off
Victoria turned toward Morrison.
“Captain Morrison, you're suspended pending investigation.”
“What?”
“Your badge and weapon.”
Morrison stared at her.
“Thirty years of service—”
“Doesn't place you above the law.”
His hands shook as he removed his badge.
Then Victoria faced Whitmore.
“Officer Whitmore, you are suspended without pay.”
“But I was doing my job.”
“No,” Victoria replied.
“You were abusing your authority.”
Whitmore looked around desperately.
“I didn't know who you were.”
Victoria stepped closer.
“That is the problem.”
She pointed toward the civilians holding their phones.
“You treated me the way you believed you were permitted to treat an ordinary Black woman.”
She looked at the camera crews.
“And now the entire country has seen it.”
Then she noticed something on the pavement.
The knife Whitmore had planted beside her.
Evidence he had claimed to find.
Victoria pointed toward it.
“That will be submitted for forensic examination.”
Whitmore swallowed.
His entire story had just collapsed.
The Investigation
Two weeks later, the parking-lot video had been viewed millions of times.
But the video was only the beginning.
