THE WOMAN THEY THOUGHT THEY COULD SILENCE

 “Step Away From the Vehicle”

The first thing Maya Bennett noticed was the reflection of the police lights.

Red.

Blue.

Red again.

They flashed across the polished black surface of her SUV, turning the vehicle into something almost unreal beneath the cold evening lights of the shopping center parking lot.

Maya stood beside the driver's door with one hand resting on the roof.

She had been there less than three minutes.

She was waiting for her younger brother.

That was all.

She had parked outside a pharmacy because she needed to pick up medication for her father. Her brother, Andre, had gone inside to get it while Maya stayed with the car.

She was wearing a gray business suit.

Her briefcase sat on the passenger seat.

Her phone was in her hand.

Her keys were visible between her fingers.

There was nothing suspicious about the scene.

Until the police cruiser stopped behind her.

The driver's door opened.

A tall officer stepped out.

“Ma'am!”

Maya turned.

“Can I help you?”

“Step away from the vehicle.”

Maya frowned.

“Excuse me?”

“I said step away from the vehicle.”

She slowly raised both hands.

“Of course.”

She took two steps backward.

The officer approached.

His nameplate read Officer Grant Harlan.

Another officer remained inside the cruiser.

Harlan stopped several feet away.

“Is this your vehicle?”

“Yes.”

“What's your name?”

“Maya Bennett.”

“Do you have identification?”

“Yes.”

“Where is it?”

“In my purse.”

“Where's your purse?”

“Inside the vehicle.”

Harlan glanced at the open driver's door.

“Can you prove this vehicle belongs to you?”

“My registration is in the glove compartment.”

“You don't have it on you?”

“No.”

“Convenient.”

Maya stared at him.

“I wasn't driving. My brother was inside the pharmacy.”

“Your brother?”

“Yes.”

“Name?”

“Andre Bennett.”

“Where is he?”

“Inside.”

Harlan looked toward the pharmacy entrance.

Then back at Maya.

“Ma'am, this vehicle was reported stolen.”

Maya blinked.

“What?”

“You heard me.”

“That can't be right.”

“Why not?”

“Because I own it.”

Harlan's expression didn't change.

“Everyone says that.”

Maya felt something cold settle in her stomach.

“Officer, if you run the license plate, you'll see my name.”

“We already ran it.”

“And?”

He hesitated.

“The plate is registered to someone else.”

Maya's eyebrows lifted.

“That is impossible.”

Harlan stepped closer.

“Turn around.”

“Why?”

“You're being detained.”

“I haven't done anything.”

“Turn around.”

Maya looked at the cruiser.

Then at the pharmacy.

Then at the SUV.

“My driver's license is inside the vehicle.”

“I'll get it.”

“You're going to enter my vehicle?”

“Yes.”

“Then you'll find the registration.”

Harlan walked toward the driver's door.

Maya watched him open it.

He leaned inside.

Then he stepped back.

“Where's the registration?”

“In the glove compartment.”

He opened it.

He searched.

He pulled out a document.

He looked at it.

Maya waited.

Then he folded it and placed it into his pocket.

Her eyes narrowed.

“Why did you put that in your pocket?”

“Evidence.”

“Evidence of what?”

“Vehicle theft.”

Maya stared at him.

“You just found proof that the vehicle belongs to me.”

Harlan's jaw tightened.

“Turn around.”

“This is a mistake.”

“Turn around.”

“I am an attorney.”

That stopped him.

“For what?”

“The State Ethics Commission.”

Harlan smiled.

“You expect me to believe that?”

Maya didn't answer.

He pulled out handcuffs.

She stared at them.

“Officer, think carefully about what you're doing.”

“I am.”

“No, you're not.”

He grabbed her wrist.

Maya remained calm.

“I'm cooperating.”

“Then don't resist.”

“I haven't resisted.”

The handcuffs clicked shut.

Maya felt the metal bite into her skin.

Across the parking lot, people had begun watching.

A teenager lifted his phone.

A woman stopped beside a shopping cart.

A man stepped out of his truck.

Nobody knew what had happened.

All they could see was a Black woman being handcuffed beside a luxury SUV.

Then the pharmacy doors opened.

Andre came running outside.

“Maya!”

His face changed when he saw the handcuffs.
