Ten Seconds
Everything happened in ten seconds.
Delgado pulled the cuffs free.
Deacon moved.
Not toward Delgado.
Toward Maggie.
He pulled her behind him.
Reese grabbed Delgado's arm.
Delgado shoved him away.
A chair flew.
Someone screamed.
A boot struck the wooden platform.
The preacher dropped his Bible.
Buckshot yelped and crawled beneath the altar.
Deacon turned.
His entire club was standing.
Forty men.
Forty pairs of eyes.
Waiting.
Deacon raised his hand.
"Nobody moves."
They stopped.
Delgado stared at him.
"You're under arrest."
Deacon looked at Reese.
"Is that true?"
Reese hesitated.
"No."
Delgado's face reddened.
"What?"
"No."
Reese stepped between them.
"We have no probable cause."
Delgado shoved him.
Reese stumbled backward.
The club erupted with angry voices.
Deacon's hand rose again.
Silence.
He looked at Delgado.
"You're done."
Delgado laughed.
"You think a bunch of bikers can scare me?"
"No."
Deacon pointed toward the road.
"I think you should be more afraid of what happens when the truth gets written down."
The Camera
A young woman stepped out from behind the wedding chairs.
She was Maggie's niece, Claire.
She held a phone.
"I recorded everything."
Delgado froze.
Claire turned the screen around.
The video showed everything.
The arrival.
The insults.
Buckshot being kicked.
The confrontation.
Delgado grabbing Maggie.
And Reese telling him to stop.
Nobody spoke.
Deacon looked at Claire.
"Send it."
"Already did."
"To who?"
"The county sheriff."
Delgado's face went white.
"And the local news station."
Reese closed his eyes.
Delgado looked at him.
"You did this."
Reese shook his head.
"No."
He pointed toward the phone.
"You did."
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Then the distant sound of sirens drifted across the desert.
Delgado looked toward the road.
More vehicles appeared.
This time, they weren't coming to arrest the bikers.
They were coming for him.
The Sheriff Arrives
The county sheriff stepped from the lead vehicle.
Sheriff Marcus Bell.
He had known Deacon for years.
Not as a criminal.
As a citizen.
As a man who had organized charity rides, raised money for veterans, and helped rebuild homes after wildfires.
Bell looked at the scene.
Broken chairs.
Scattered glasses.
The wounded dog.
Then he looked at Delgado.
"What happened?"
Delgado opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Reese stepped forward.
"I'll tell you."
Delgado stared at him.
"Reese."
"I'm done lying for you."
The young deputy explained everything.
The unauthorized entry.
The insults.
