For years, the Cross family had controlled the company.

But over the previous three years, Crosswell had accumulated debt.

Bad acquisitions.

Failed expansion.

Legal disputes.

Government contracts that were no longer as profitable as they once had been.

Daniel had noticed the weaknesses long before anyone else.

He had started buying distressed debt connected to Crosswell.

Then he bought shares.

Then more.

Finally, six months earlier, he had negotiated a private restructuring agreement.

The result was something the Cross family had not yet fully understood.

Daniel Carter now controlled 52 percent of Crosswell Technologies.

He wasn't merely an investor.

He was the majority shareholder.

His attorney, Miriam Cole, entered the office.

"You had an interesting morning."

Daniel smiled.

"You heard?"

"The neighborhood group is already talking."

Daniel shook his head.

"I expected that."

Miriam placed a folder on his desk.

"There's something else."

"What?"

"Your neighbor."

"Evelyn?"

"Yes."

Daniel opened the folder.

Her name appeared on the first page.

Evelyn Cross — Executive Vice President, Crosswell Technologies.

Daniel stared at the page.

"I didn't know she lived here."

Miriam smiled.

"Apparently she didn't know who bought the company either."

Daniel closed the folder.

"She will."

"When?"

"Tomorrow."

Miriam studied him.

"Are you sure?"

Daniel nodded.

"She deserves to know the truth."

"Or you're giving her a shock."

Daniel looked toward the window.

"I didn't buy Crosswell to punish anyone."

"Then why?"

He thought about his father's name.

James Carter.

A brilliant engineer who had once worked for Crosswell.

A man whose patents had helped build the company's early success.

A man who had left the company after a dispute over intellectual property.

Daniel had spent years discovering what really happened.

And now he was finally close to the truth.

"I bought the company," Daniel said quietly, "because someone needs to know what happened to my father's work."

The next morning, Evelyn entered Crosswell's headquarters expecting another ordinary executive meeting.

She had no idea what waited upstairs.

Her father was already in the boardroom.

Richard Cross was seventy-one, silver-haired, disciplined, and accustomed to being obeyed.

"Why am I here?" Evelyn asked.

Richard didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he looked toward the company's general counsel.

"We have a new controlling shareholder."

Evelyn frowned.

"Since when?"

"Since last month."

"Why wasn't I told?"

Richard's expression hardened.

"Because the restructuring agreement was confidential."

The doors opened.

Daniel Carter walked in.

Evelyn froze.

For several seconds she couldn't speak.

"You."

Daniel stopped.

"Good morning, Ms. Cross."

Her father looked between them.

"You two know each other?"

Evelyn's voice was barely controlled.
