She stopped.

Motorcycles.

Dozens.

Then hundreds.

Both sides of the street were lined with them.

Her hands tightened around the steering wheel.

“What is happening?”

She slowly drove forward.

Then she saw Marcus.

He stood outside her house.

The moment their eyes met, Emily knew.

She pulled over.

She stumbled out of the car.

“Marcus?”

He walked toward her.

“You stopped for me.”

Emily's eyes filled with tears.

“When everyone else drove past.”

He looked back at the riders.

“Today we came back to stop for you.”

Emily couldn't speak.

Two hundred forty riders stood behind him.

Hawk stepped forward.

Tiny pulled the canvas cover from the sedan.

Emily stared.

“What is that?”

“Yours,” Tiny said.

“No.”

“Title's already transferred.”

“I can't accept this.”

Marcus stepped closer.

“You can.”

“But—”

“You gave me your last bottle of water.”

“I didn't do it for this.”

“I know.”

Then Tiny handed her another folder.

“This is your mother's medical fund.”

Emily opened it.

She stared.

“What's this?”

“Everything.”

“The surgery?”

“Covered.”

“Follow-up care?”

“Covered.”

“The old bills?”

“All covered.”

Emily's knees gave out.

Marcus caught her.

She sobbed against his vest.

“Why?”

Marcus held her.

“Because you gave me back my humanity.”

Emily shook her head.

“I just gave you water.”

Marcus looked into her eyes.

“That wasn't just water.”

The Debt

Marcus turned toward the crowd.

“Fourteen days ago, I was standing on a highway with a dead motorcycle.”

The riders listened.

“Cars passed me for over an hour.”

He pointed toward Emily.

“Then she stopped.”

A silence settled over the street.

“She didn't ask who I was.”

“She didn't ask what club I belonged to.”

“She didn't care about the tattoos.”

“She saw a man who was thirsty.”

Marcus's voice cracked slightly.

“And she gave me the last bottle of water she had.”

Emily cried quietly.

Marcus continued.

“She had spent her last money on her mother's medicine.”

“She was driving on fumes.”

“She was exhausted.”

“And she still stopped.”

He looked at the riders.

“We didn't come here to give Emily charity.”

“We came here to pay a debt.”

The crowd erupted.

Engines roared.

People applauded.

Neighbors who once crossed the street when they saw motorcycle vests were now walking toward them.

Shaking their hands.

Thanking them.

For the first time, Emily saw something she had never expected.

Kindness had traveled farther than fear.

The Father Nobody Knew Was Alive

The celebration was still happening when Cole pulled Marcus aside.

“I found something.”

Marcus frowned.

“About what?”

“Emily's father.”

Marcus listened.

“He's alive.”

Marcus went still.

Emily had believed her father was dead.

But he wasn't.

He lived forty minutes away.

He had remarried.

He was comfortable.

And, according to the information Cole had found, Emily had contacted him twice asking for help with her mother's medical bills.

He ignored both calls.

Marcus felt anger rise.

“Does Emily know?”

“No.”

“Don't tell her today.”

Cole nodded.

“Then what?”

Marcus looked toward Emily.

“Tomorrow.”

The next morning, Marcus told Hawk.

Hawk warned him.

“This isn't about revenge.”

“I know.”

“You're angry.”

“Yes.”

“Then control it.”

Marcus nodded.

They went together.

Three motorcycles.

Not 240.

They weren't going to threaten Richard.

They were going to make him look at the consequences of what he'd done.

Richard opened the door.

When he saw them, his expression changed.

“Are you Richard Carter?”

“Yes.”

“I'm Marcus Walker.”

Richard looked uneasy.

“Emily's friend.”

“I don't have anything to say.”

Marcus remained calm.

“We're not here for money.”

Richard looked confused.

“Then what do you want?”

“The truth.”

Richard's face hardened.

“Emily's life isn't my responsibility anymore.”

Hawk answered quietly.
