Her papers were everywhere.

One page had landed beneath Victoria's heel.

Maya bent to pick it up.

Victoria deliberately stepped onto Maya's hand.

"Don't touch those."

Maya looked at her fingers.

Pain shot through her hand.

Victoria turned toward the crowd.

"Security will handle her."

Maya slowly stood.

Chocolate dripped from her hair.

She checked her watch.

10:09 p.m.

Six minutes.

Then she looked directly at Victoria.

There was no anger in her eyes.

Only calculation.

Victoria mistook that calmness for weakness.

That would become her greatest mistake.

 The Woman Nobody Recognized

Marcus Carter, the hotel's general manager, hurried toward them.

He had managed luxury events for twenty years.

He knew how to handle angry billionaires.

He knew how to handle drunk celebrities.

He knew how to handle political scandals.

But he had never seen anything quite like this.

"Miss Sterling," he said carefully, "perhaps we should take everyone to a private area."

"Absolutely not."

Victoria grabbed the microphone from a nearby podium.

"I want everyone to see this."

Marcus's face tightened.

"Miss Sterling—"

She raised the microphone.

"Ladies and gentlemen, we have a security situation."

The ballroom fell silent.

Three hundred faces turned toward Maya.

Maya stood in the center of the room with chocolate cake dripping from her hair.

She could hear hundreds of phones recording.

Victoria pointed at her.

"This woman infiltrated our private gala."

A murmur moved through the crowd.

Maya looked at Marcus.

"Mister Carter, could you please verify my credentials?"

Victoria laughed.

"Her credentials?"

She turned toward the audience.

"She's carrying fake documents and pretending to be a Microsoft executive."

Maya remained silent.

Victoria continued.

"Look at her. She's obviously trying to impress people with a fake designer dress and a fake watch."

A technology executive near the bar whispered:

"That's a Rolex."

His colleague nodded.

"A very expensive one."

Victoria didn't hear them.

Or didn't care.

"And that briefcase?" she said. "Probably stolen."

Maya glanced at the scattered documents.

One of the papers had landed beneath a table.

Another was covered in chocolate.

She looked at her watch again.

10:10 p.m.

Five minutes.

Her phone vibrated inside her purse.

She pulled it out.

The screen was cracked from when Victoria had stepped on her hand.

A message appeared.

JENNIFER — Microsoft Executive Office

Board watching live stream. Emergency call in 3 minutes. Signing remains scheduled for 10:15.

Maya looked up.

Victoria saw the phone.

"There!"

She pointed dramatically.

"She's communicating with someone."

Maya sighed.

She had spent eight months negotiating a multibillion-dollar agreement.

She had flown across the country for this ceremony.

She had spent the last three days at the hotel finalizing the final clauses.

And now she was standing in the middle of a ballroom covered in chocolate because someone had decided her skin color made her an intruder.

Maya put her phone away.

Then she reached into her purse.

She removed a business card.

"Mister Carter."

Marcus accepted it.

His eyes moved across the card.

Then his face changed.

He looked at Maya.

Then at Victoria.

Then back at the card.

"Dr. Maya Washington..."

"Yes."

"Senior Vice President, Microsoft Azure."

Victoria snatched the card.

She stared at it.

Then laughed.

"This is fake."

Marcus looked stunned.

Victoria waved the card.

"Do you honestly expect me to believe this?"

Maya didn't respond.

Victoria held up the card.

"Microsoft executives don't look like—"

She stopped.

A few guests exchanged uncomfortable glances.

Maya finished the sentence for her.

"Like me?"

Victoria's cheeks reddened.

"You know what I meant."

"No," Maya said quietly. "I don't."

The room grew even quieter.

Marcus looked toward the security team.

"Verify the badge."

One security officer approached.

Maya opened the Microsoft executive portal on her phone.

Her photograph appeared.

Her employee identification appeared.

Her position appeared.

Her authorization level appeared.

And beneath it was the project title:

Sterling Industries Strategic Cloud Partnership — $4.2 Billion.

The security officer stared.

"Ma'am..."

Maya nodded.

"Please call Microsoft's headquarters."

Victoria's confidence began to disappear.

"No."

Marcus picked up his phone.

"Miss Sterling—"

"I said no!"

He ignored her.

The call connected.

"Microsoft Corporation. How may I direct your call?"

Marcus swallowed.

"I'm calling from the Sterling Grand Hotel. I'm trying to verify the identity of Dr. Maya Washington."

"Certainly. Please hold."

The ballroom was silent.

Then a woman's voice came through the speaker.

"Executive Office of Dr. Washington. This is Jennifer."

Maya closed her eyes briefly.

"Jennifer, it's me."

There was a pause.

"Oh my God."

Jennifer's voice changed.

"Dr. Washington, are you okay?"

"I'm fine."

"Are you sure? We've been watching the live stream."

A murmur spread through the ballroom.

Jennifer continued.

"Legal is already asking whether they should contact the police."

Victoria stepped forward.

"She's lying!"

Jennifer heard her.

"Who was that?"

Maya looked at Victoria.

"That's Victoria Sterling."

Jennifer's voice became colder.

"Yes. We know who she is."

Victoria froze.

Maya looked at the nearest camera.

She knew millions of people might eventually see this footage.

She could have screamed.

She could have demanded security remove Victoria.

Instead, she calmly said:

"Ladies and gentlemen, I am Dr. Maya Washington, Senior Vice President of Microsoft Azure."
