Chapter 1: The Briefcase No One Expected
For a long moment, no one moved.
Emma's wedding ring rested in the center of the polished oak dining table, catching the warm glow of the chandelier like a tiny piece of forgotten sunlight.
Daniel stared at it.
Then at her.
"What is this?" he finally asked, forcing out an uneasy laugh. "Some kind of joke?"
Emma looked at him with the same calm expression she had worn throughout dinner.
"No."
Across the table, Daniel's mother, Evelyn Carter, folded her napkin with theatrical annoyance.
"If this is another one of Emma's emotional episodes, can we finish dessert first?"
Nobody laughed.
Jonathan Reed quietly opened the weathered leather briefcase.
It wasn't expensive.
It wasn't impressive.
But inside sat thirty years of contracts, financial statements, sworn affidavits, medical reports, and notarized letters.
Every page represented a secret.
