Everything seemed normal.

Except it wasn't.

My phone vibrated.

Melissa again.

Marcus Reed is not listed as a passenger.

I stared at the screen.

Then another message.

He was added manually 18 minutes before boarding.

I looked toward the galley.

That meant someone with access had inserted him into the system.

The same access level that had altered my seat.

I leaned back.

There was a conspiracy.

And someone had used a rude woman in first class as camouflage.

The question was:

Why me?

My phone vibrated again.

Daniel, check the acquisition file.

I opened the secure document.

One line was highlighted.

Northstar Aviation — internal compliance review pending.

Beneath it:

Potential undisclosed liability: $480 million.

I stopped breathing for a moment.

Four hundred eighty million dollars.

Someone inside Northstar had something enormous to hide.

And I was about to become the person who could expose it.

The Truth Behind 1A

The plane leveled out.

The cabin settled.

I looked at Victoria.

She was staring through the window.

“Ms. Harrington.”

She didn't respond.

“Why are you carrying Northstar documents?”

Her jaw tightened.

“It's none of your business.”

“Probably not.”

I paused.

“But someone changed my seat to put you here.”

She looked at me.

“You think I did that?”

“I don't know.”

“I didn't.”

“Then who did?”

She didn't answer.

Marcus stepped closer.

“Mr. Brooks, this conversation is over.”

I looked at him.

“No.”

His eyes narrowed.

“You don't understand the situation.”

“I understand enough.”

I lowered my voice.

“Someone altered a reservation using an executive authorization.”

He didn't respond.

“Then someone inserted you into the passenger manifest.”

Still nothing.

“And now you're standing next to a woman carrying Northstar documents.”

Marcus smiled faintly.

“You're making assumptions.”

“No.”

I pointed toward the tablet in his hand.

“I'm making observations.”

He stepped closer.

“Be careful.”

I stared at him.

“That's advice?”

“It's a warning.”

Victoria suddenly spoke.

“Marcus, stop.”

He looked at her.

She shook her head.

Then she looked at me.

“I didn't steal your seat.”

“I know.”

She seemed surprised.

“How?”

“Because if you had planned this, you wouldn't have behaved like that.”

Her face hardened.

“You don't know me.”

“No.”

I leaned back.

“But I know fear.”

She went quiet.

I continued.

“You were angry when you thought you were in control.”

“When you realized something was wrong, you became nervous.”

“You're not afraid of me.”

Her eyes flickered.

“You're afraid of whatever is inside that envelope.”

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then she whispered:

“My husband works for Northstar.”

I waited.

“He discovered financial irregularities.”

Marcus interrupted.

“That is enough.”

Victoria ignored him.

“He tried to report them.”

Her voice trembled.

“Two weeks ago, he disappeared.”

The cabin seemed suddenly colder.

“What?”

“He wasn't supposed to disappear,” she said.

“He was supposed to meet someone from compliance.”

Then she looked toward Marcus.

“And that person never arrived.”

Marcus stepped forward.

“Victoria.”

She turned.

“You told me you could protect him.”

Marcus's face became expressionless.

“But you didn't.”

The silence was absolute.

I understood.

Victoria wasn't the mastermind.

She was desperate.

The seat wasn't about status.

It was about access.

Someone had placed her in 1A because they expected something to happen.

Maybe they expected me to be angry.

Maybe they expected a confrontation.

Maybe they expected me to leave the aircraft.

Instead, I stayed.

And now the truth was beginning to surface.

The Hidden File

Victoria handed me the black envelope.

Inside was a small flash drive.

“Don't open it here,” she whispered.

“Why?”

“Because they are monitoring the aircraft.”

I looked at Marcus.

He was no longer pretending to be calm.

“Who?”

Victoria shook her head.

“I don't know.”

Then she said something that changed everything.

“Your company was supposed to purchase Northstar's logistics division.”

“Yes.”

“Someone doesn't want that sale to happen.”

I understood.

Brooks Meridian was negotiating the acquisition.

If Northstar's hidden liabilities became public before closing, the deal could collapse.

But why sabotage me?

Victoria answered without knowing my thoughts.

“Because your company would discover the missing money.”

“How much?”

“Four hundred eighty million.”

I looked at the flash drive.

“What is on this?”

“Proof.”

Marcus suddenly reached for it.

I pulled it away.

He grabbed my wrist.

The cabin became silent.

“Give it to me,” he said.

I didn't move.

“Let go.”

He tightened his grip.

“Don't make this worse.”

I looked directly into his eyes.

“You've already made it worse.”

Sarah rushed forward.

“Sir!”

Marcus released me.

I handed the flash drive to Sarah.

“Keep this.”

She stared.

“Why me?”

“Because if something happens to me, you give it to the captain.”

Marcus turned pale.

“That's unnecessary.”

I smiled.

“Is it?”

The captain's voice suddenly came through the intercom.

“Flight crew, please prepare for descent.”

We were still hours from San Francisco.

That wasn't normal.

Sarah looked confused.

She went to the cockpit.

A minute later, she returned.
