Chapter 14: The Paris Operation

The winter drizzle settled over Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport, casting a dull gray sheen across the concrete aprons of Terminal 2E. Through the tall glass panels of the departure lounge, Chloe Vance observed the ground crews in high-visibility vests maneuvering luggage carts and fuel tenders around an incoming Airbus A350.

Wearing a beige trench coat over a dark sweater and holding a warm paper cup of espresso, Chloe looked indistinguishable from any other young professional waiting for a flight.

Her target for this assignment was Flight 302, a high-volume route connecting Paris to New York. Over the past three months, internal metrics flagged CDG with unusually high rates of delayed premium baggage, unexplained last-minute seat upgrades, and frequent inventory write-offs for First Class champagne and luxury amenity kits. On paper, everything was logged as "operational variance."

Chloe intended to find out what "variance" actually meant.

Instead of boarding early, Chloe remained near the gate podium, watching the ground staff through her reflection in the window. A senior ground handling supervisor named Laurent—wearing a heavy high-vis coat over a suit—stood near the jet bridge door, holding a wireless tablet.

A sleekly dressed couple approached Laurent directly, bypassing the long Priority queue entirely. The man slipped a thick white envelope into Laurent’s coat pocket while exchanging a low, familiar handshake. Seconds later, Laurent tapped his tablet twice, pulled two physical First Class boarding passes from his inner pocket, and handed them over.

Chloe’s eyes narrowed slightly. She pulled out her phone, tapping a discreet app that logged high-resolution timestamped photos from her coat pocket camera.

Manual seat issuance outside the gate system.

She waited until standard boarding commenced before stepping onto the jet bridge. Instead of proceeding straight into the aircraft, she slipped into the service alcove near the jet bridge controls—a zone usually reserved for ground mechanics—and stood silently behind a stack of folded baggage covers.

Below, on the tarmac level near the baggage belt loader, two handlers were unzipping heavy leather suitcases marked with red Priority First Class tags. They weren't checking baggage tags—they were systematically opening side pockets, sliding out luxury duty-free items, sealed cartons of high-end perfume, and bottles of vintage champagne, slipping them directly into unmarked black duffel bags stored behind the tug cart.

Laurent stood right beside them, checking his watch and signaling when the ramp camera rotated away on its automated sweep.

It wasn't a series of random mistakes or isolated incidents. It was an organized, well-orchestrated syndicate operating right under the nose of airport security.

Chloe raised her phone, recording three minutes of continuous, crystal-clear video footage documenting the entire sequence: the stolen items, the tampered baggage tags, and Laurent overseeing the loading of the black duffel bags into a private utility vehicle parked near the perimeter fence.

"Qu'est-ce que tu fais là?" a sharp voice barked in French from behind her.

Chloe turned smoothly around. A second ground supervisor, holding a walkie-talkie, was standing at the entrance of the service alcove, glaring at her with immediate suspicion.

"Vous n'avez pas le droit d'être ici," he snapped, reaching for his radio. "Security!"

Chloe didn't flinch or panic. She reached into her trench coat, pulled out her matte-black badge, and held it up directly in front of his eyes.

The silver lettering gleamed under the overhead fluorescent lights: Global Sky Holdings – Operational Audit & Integrity Division.

"Global Sky Corporate Audit," Chloe spoke in fluent, unhurried French, her tone ice-cold. "I am Senior Auditor Vance. Your name and badge number, please."

The supervisor’s face turned gray. His hand froze on his walkie-talkie as he looked at the credentials, then past her toward the tarmac where his colleagues were still sliding stolen duffel bags into the utility cart.

"Madame... c'est... c'est une erreur—" he stammered, stepping back.

"It is an error that ends right now," Chloe stated firmly. She pulled out her satellite comms unit, hit the emergency priority dial, and brought the speaker to her ear.

"This is Senior Auditor Vance, ID 4082," she said clearly. "Initiate an immediate lockdown of Flight 302 ground handling at CDG Terminal 2E. Notify French Federal Transportation Police and Global Sky Corporate Security. I have direct visual and digital evidence of widespread cargo theft and unauthorized seat trafficking."

Three hours later, the private executive conference room inside the Global Sky CDG Station Office was bustling with federal officers and senior security personnel. Laurent and three ground handlers had been taken into custody, their lockers searched to reveal over fifty thousand euros worth of stolen luxury goods and forged seat passes.

Station Manager Henri sat at the main desk, his head buried in his hands, sweating profusely as French police reviewed the evidence files Chloe had uploaded to the secure server.

Arthur Pendelton, having flown in on a high-speed corporate jet from London the moment the emergency alert was raised, stood near the window with his hands folded behind his back.

"Fifty-two counts of cargo theft and thirty-eight illegal seat overrides over six months," Arthur said softly, turning his gaze toward the trembling Station Manager. "And you noticed nothing, Henri?"

"Mr. Pendelton, I swear... they bypassed our local audit logs!" Henri pleaded frantically. "It was impossible to catch!"

"It was impossible to catch because your management was weak and complicit," Arthur replied sternly. "You are relieved of your duties effective immediately."

He turned toward Chloe, who was sitting at the side table, calmly sipping a bottle of water while reviewing the finalized incident report.

Arthur walked over, looking down at her notes. A genuine, proud smile touched his lips.

"You uncovered in three hours what external security consultants missed for two years, Chloe," Arthur said quietly.

Chloe closed her notebook and looked up at him. "When you've scrubbed floors and seen how people act when they think nobody is watching, you learn where they hide the dirt, Mr. Pendelton."

Arthur nodded slowly. "The Board is promoting you to Lead Director of European Integrity Operations starting tomorrow. You'll be overseeing the complete overhaul of our ground security across all hubs."

Chloe stood up, holding her leather folder firmly against her side. "I accept, sir. And we start with Heathrow first thing Monday morning."
