Noah looked up.

“The reckless fighter asks, ‘How much can I do?’”

Miller pointed toward Noah's chest.

“The disciplined fighter asks, ‘How much should I do?’”

Noah was silent.

Miller walked toward the equipment room.

Before disappearing, he said:

“Come back tomorrow morning.”

“For training?”

“No.”

Noah frowned.

“For cleaning.”

An Unexpected Visitor

The next morning, Noah cleaned the mats.

For two hours.

Nobody spoke to him.

Some students looked surprised.

Others tried not to smile.

Noah didn't care.

At least, he told himself he didn't.

After he finished, Miller handed him a mop.

“The locker room.”

Noah stared at him.

“You're enjoying this.”

“A little.”

For the first time in days, Noah laughed.

Later that afternoon, Maya arrived.

She stopped when she saw Noah.

Neither spoke.

Finally, Maya said, “How's your neck?”

Noah asked.

“Better.”

“Good.”

She started walking away.

“Maya.”

She stopped.

Noah struggled for words.

“I'm sorry.”

She turned.

He continued.

“I mean it.”

Maya studied him.

“Okay.”

Noah frowned.

“That's it?”

“What do you want me to say?”

“I don't know.”

She walked closer.

“Do you want me to forgive you?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Noah hesitated.

“Because I don't want you to hate me.”

Maya shook her head.

“I don't hate you.”

He looked surprised.

“I was angry.”

“I know.”

“But anger isn't the same as hate.”

Noah nodded.

Maya looked at him carefully.

“You want to know what scared me?”

Noah waited.

“Not the hold.”

“What, then?”

“The look on your face when Miller told you to stop.”

Noah's expression fell.

“You looked like you didn't hear him.”

“I heard him.”

“I know.”

She paused.

“That was the scary part.”

Noah had no answer.

Maya walked toward the locker room.

At the doorway, she stopped.

“Don't apologize to me again.”

Noah looked at her.

“Then who do I apologize to?”

She smiled slightly.

“Yourself.”

Then she left.

Noah stood alone.

For the first time, he understood that forgiveness wasn't something another person could hand him.

It was something he would have to earn by becoming someone who no longer needed the same apology.

 The Old Video

That evening, Miller called Noah into his office.

He closed the door.

Then he opened an old laptop.

“I want to show you something.”

A video appeared.

The footage was grainy.

A young fighter stood inside a ring.

Noah recognized Miller immediately.

But he had never seen him like this.

Younger.

Faster.

Angrier.

The fight was brutal.

Miller dominated the first few minutes.

Then the referee called for a break.

Miller didn't release immediately.

The opponent fell badly.

The video stopped.

Noah stared at the screen.

“What happened?”

“I was disqualified.”

“Was he badly hurt?”

“No.”

Miller leaned back.

“But he could have been.”

Noah looked at him.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because I didn't want you copying my mistakes.”

Noah remained silent.

Miller continued.

“I spent years thinking that moment ruined my career.”

“And did it?”

“Not exactly.”

Miller looked at the frozen image.

“It ruined the version of me who thought winning was everything.”

Noah understood.

Miller wasn't speaking as a coach anymore.

He was speaking as the man he used to be.

“I thought you hated me,” Noah said.

“I don't.”

“Then why are you so hard on me?”

“Because I know exactly where your road leads.”

Noah swallowed.

Miller closed the laptop.

“I can't make your choices for you.”

He stood.

“But I can warn you.”

Noah looked toward the window.

“What if I fail?”

“You will.”

Noah frowned.

“Everyone fails.”

“Then why does that scare you so much?”

Noah didn't answer.

Miller smiled sadly.

“That's the question you should be asking.”

No Second Chances

Noah returned to full training.

But everything had changed.

He was no longer allowed to train alone.

Miller paired him with Maya.

Their first sparring session was awkward.

Noah moved cautiously.

“You're holding back,” Maya said.

“I'm trying not to hurt you.”

“Then learn control.”

She attacked.

Noah blocked.

She attacked again.

He countered.

For several minutes, neither gained an advantage.

Then Maya caught Noah in a submission.

Noah struggled.

His instincts screamed at him to explode forward.

Instead, he tapped.

Maya released immediately.

Noah sat up.

“Again.”

They went again.

This time, Noah escaped.

He had the opportunity to continue.

He didn't.
