"I have cooperated."

"You continue doing it."

"Because I need to."

"For your mother?"

Elena's expression changed.

"Yes."

"Then find another solution."

"You don't get to decide how I care for my mother."

Nancy stepped closer.

"Your choices affect other people."

"So do yours."

Silence.

Maya could feel the tension.

Sofia slowly approached the door.

"Elena?"

"I'm handling it."

Nancy looked through the glass.

"I would like to speak with Sofia."

Elena shook her head.

"No."

"I think she deserves to know what's happening."

"My mother does not need to be involved."

Nancy moved toward the door.

Elena blocked her.

"Stop."

Nancy reached for the handle.

Elena's voice became louder.

"Do not open that door."

Nancy stopped.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then Nancy stepped back.

The argument ended.

Or so everyone thought.

The following morning, Elena received a notice from the HOA.

Complaint filed against Unit 58.

She stared at the letter.

Maya watched her.

"What are you going to do?"

"Nothing yet."

"She's going to keep doing this."

"I know."

Sofia sat quietly at the table.

After several minutes, she said, "Your neighbor is not really angry about leaves."

Elena looked at her.

"What do you mean?"

"She is frightened."

"Of me?"

"No."

Sofia shook her head.

"Of losing control."

Elena sat down.

She knew her mother was right.

But understanding someone's fear did not mean accepting their behavior.

That afternoon, Elena contacted Richard.

She explained what had happened.

Richard sounded troubled.

"I'll speak to Nancy."

"Please do."

"And Elena?"

"Yes?"

"If there is another confrontation, don't argue with her. Walk away."

"I tried."

"I know."

Meanwhile, Nancy sat in her living room.

She had rewritten her complaint three times.

Harold watched television.

"You haven't turned the page in that notebook for twenty minutes."

Nancy closed it.

"She doesn't respect anyone."

Harold looked at her.

"Maybe she doesn't respect you."

Nancy's eyes flashed.

"What is that supposed to mean?"

"It means you can't force everyone to behave the way you want."

"I am asking for reasonable consideration."

"Maybe."

"Maybe?"

Harold lowered the television volume.

"Nancy, you're not yourself."

The words hurt.

"Don't say that."

"I'm not insulting you."

"You don't understand."

"Then explain it."

She couldn't.

Because the truth was embarrassing.

She was scared.

Scared of Harold falling.

Scared of being responsible for everything.

Scared that the new house didn't feel like home.

Scared that the old life was gone.

The leaf blower was simply the easiest thing to blame.

But she did not tell Harold any of that.

Instead, she said:

"I'm going to make sure the rules are enforced."

That evening, Elena noticed something strange.

The gate between the properties had been left open.

She closed it.

The next morning, it was open again.

Then came a note.

PLEASE KEEP YOUR EQUIPMENT ON YOUR OWN PROPERTY.

Elena stared at it.

She had never moved the blower beyond her patio.

Something was happening.

And she knew it was getting worse.

The confrontation happened on a rainy Sunday.

Leaves covered the patio.

Sofia needed to use the back steps.

Elena waited until the rain weakened, then brought out the blower.

She had barely started when Nancy appeared.

This time, Nancy did not shout.

She simply stood near the gate.

Elena switched the machine off.

"I don't want to argue."

"Neither do I."

"Then what do you want?"

"I want you to understand that you're disturbing my husband."

Elena paused.

That was different.
