They talked.

They argued.

Noah spilled his milk.

Everyone laughed.

Even Samuel.

Clara watched him.

And for the first time, she saw the man beneath the exhaustion.

He was lonely.

Terribly lonely.

After dinner, Samuel found Clara on the porch.

"You didn't have to do that."

"Yes, I did."

"You've been here one day."

"Exactly."

He looked at her.

"I need to tell you something."

She waited.

"I'm not sure I can give you the kind of marriage you expected."

Clara almost laughed.

"I didn't expect anything."

"That's not true."

"You're right."

She looked toward the dark fields.

"I expected a roof. Food. Work. Safety."

"And now?"

Clara thought about the six boys.

"Now I expect something more."

Samuel's face tightened.

"What?"

"That you stop treating yourself like you're the only person allowed to suffer."

He stared at her.

Nobody had spoken to him that way in years.

"You don't know me."

"No."

"But you think you understand me."

"No."

She turned toward him.

"I think I understand exhaustion."

Samuel said nothing.

"And I think your sons understand it too."

He looked toward the house.

The window glowed warmly.

For the first time, Samuel seemed ashamed.

Not of Clara.

Of what his family had become.

"I don't know how to fix it," he admitted.

Clara's voice was gentle.

"Then we'll learn."

He looked at her.

"We?"

She nodded.

"If I'm going to live here, Samuel, I won't be a guest."

He smiled faintly.

"No."

"I'll work."

"I know."

"And if you expect me to stay, you're going to have to let me help."

He looked toward the house again.

"All right."

Neither knew it then.

But that was the moment their arrangement began turning into something neither had expected.

The next morning, Clara woke before sunrise.

She found Daniel already outside.

"You don't have to work today," she told him.

He shook his head.

"Someone has to."

"Your father?"

"He's checking the northern pasture."

"And you?"

"I always do this."

Clara looked at him.

"You've been doing this since your mother died."

He shrugged.

"Someone had to."

"You are eighteen."

"I know."

"You are not your father's replacement."

His expression hardened.

"You don't know what you're talking about."

Clara didn't argue.

Instead, she handed him a cup of coffee.

"Maybe."

He took it.

She walked away.

That became her method with the boys.

She didn't demand trust.

She earned it.

With Daniel, she worked.

With Matthew, she cooked.

With Isaac, she learned horses.

With Caleb, she helped repair the house.

With Ben, she read.

And with Noah, she simply stayed close.

Weeks passed.

The ranch slowly changed.

Clara discovered that the Hayes property had good soil near the creek.

She suggested planting vegetables.

Samuel initially refused.

"There's no time."

"Then we'll make time."

"We're short on water."

"We can collect rain."

"It hasn't rained in weeks."

"Then we pray for rain and prepare for it."

He stared at her.

"You always answer every objection?"

"No."

"What do you answer?"

"Excuses."

He laughed.

It was becoming easier for him to laugh.

One afternoon, a stranger arrived.

His name was Victor Bell.

He owned the largest feed store in Mercy Ridge.

He was polite to Samuel.

Not to Clara.

He looked her up and down.

"So you're the new wife."

Clara smiled.

"I am."

"I heard you came from Missouri."

"Yes."

"You know anything about ranching?"

"Some."

He laughed.

Samuel stepped forward.

"Mr. Bell."

Victor ignored him.

"Women usually don't last here."

Clara's expression remained calm.

"Perhaps you're right."

Victor smiled.

"But if I don't?"

His smile disappeared.

"Then I'll learn."

Victor left.

Samuel watched him go.

"He's trouble."

"Why?"

"He wants my northern pasture."

"Why?"

"Water rights."

Clara looked toward the horizon.

"Can he take them?"

"Not legally."

"Then why are you worried?"
