"This ain't your business."

The stranger finally answered.

"It is now."

Pike left.

His men followed.

Deputy Wade Harland lingered near the door, one hand resting near his revolver.

He studied the stranger.

Then he left too.

Silence filled the office.

Evelyn slowly sat upright.

The stranger holstered his gun.

He removed his coat and placed it around her shoulders.

She looked at him.

"Who are you?"

"Nobody important."

"What's your name?"

The stranger paused.

"Caleb."

"Caleb what?"

He looked toward the street.

"Roark."

Then he turned to the sheriff.

"You going to keep sitting there?"

Amos lifted his eyes.

Caleb stared at the badge on his chest.

"Or are you going to remember what that thing is supposed to mean?"

The sheriff said nothing.

Evelyn looked at her father.

Something inside her had broken.

Not because he had been afraid.

Because she finally understood that he had chosen fear.

And there was a difference.

Caleb Roark had been traveling for six days when he reached Las Vegas.

He had not planned to stay.

That was how he lived.

He went where the road took him.

He slept beneath the stars when he had to.

He worked when work appeared.

He rode away when people began asking too many questions.

There were stories about him.

He had heard some himself.

Some said he had been a soldier.

Others claimed he had once been a bounty hunter.

One man in Texas insisted Caleb had killed seven gunmen without missing a shot.

Caleb never confirmed any of it.

The truth was simpler.

He had spent years watching men use power to hurt people who could not defend themselves.

Eventually, he learned that he could no longer keep riding past.

That was why he stayed.

Evelyn found him outside the sheriff's office as evening approached.

"You can't leave."

Caleb looked at her.

"I can."

"You won't."

He almost smiled.

"That's different."

She folded her arms.

"Pike is going to come back."

"I know."

"He'll bring more men."

"I know."

"My father won't help."

"I know that too."

She stared at him.

"You say everything like it doesn't matter."

"It matters."

"Then why aren't you afraid?"

Caleb looked down the street.

"Being afraid is not the problem."

"What is?"

"Letting fear make your decisions."

Those words stayed with Evelyn.

They walked toward the livery stable.

The town watched them.

Men sitting outside the saloon stopped talking.

A woman pulled her child closer.

A storekeeper lowered his eyes.

Everywhere they went, people seemed to know what had happened.

But nobody said anything.

Evelyn noticed.

"You see?"

Caleb nodded.

"They're scared."

"Yes."

"They're not weak."

Caleb looked at her.

"No."

"They've just been scared for too long."

"That's usually how it starts."

At the livery stable, Caleb stopped.

Fresh wagon tracks cut through the dirt.

Deep ones.

Several wagons had passed recently.

He crouched and studied the marks.

"What are they carrying?"

Evelyn frowned.

"How would I know?"

Caleb pointed toward the tracks.

"Look at the depth."

She did.

"Heavy."

"Very."

A stable boy nearby was brushing a horse.

Caleb looked at him.

"Where did those wagons go?"

The boy kept brushing.

"I don't know."

Caleb waited.

The boy looked nervous.

Finally he whispered.

"The depot."

Evelyn's eyes widened.

"The railroad?"

The boy nodded.

Caleb stood.

"What's being shipped?"

"I don't know."

"Who owns the wagons?"

The boy said nothing.

That was answer enough.

A board creaked behind them.

Caleb turned.

A man lunged from the shadows.

His fist struck Caleb's shoulder.

Caleb stumbled but immediately recovered.

Another man appeared.
