Gray.

Warm.

Forgettable.

He pushed the spoon through it.

A younger inmate across the table noticed him.

"Hey, Pendelton."

Arthur looked up.

"Yeah?"

"You okay?"

"I'm fine."

The young man nodded uncertainly.

Arthur smiled.

"Just didn't sleep well."

That was easier than telling the truth.

He was forty.

His wife wasn't beside him.

His children weren't singing.

There were no balloons.

No pancakes.

No jasmine.

Only concrete.

Only steel.

Only another day.

Or so he thought.

He had no idea that somewhere outside those walls, three people were already preparing to break every rule they could without breaking the law.

And they were doing it for him.

Because Arthur Pendelton had spent eighteen months believing his family had forgotten how much he mattered.

He was about to discover that they hadn't forgotten at all.

They had simply been waiting.

Β The Family on the Other Side

Sarah Pendelton woke before sunrise.

She had barely slept.

She lay still for several minutes, staring at the ceiling of the bedroom she had shared with Arthur for twelve years.

His side of the bed remained untouched.

She had stopped expecting him to walk through the bedroom door.

But she had never stopped expecting him to come home.

Sarah reached for her phone.

5:17 a.m.

She opened the message she had written the previous night.

Happy birthday, Artie.

She stared at it.

Then deleted it.

It wasn't enough.

Nothing was enough anymore.

She got out of bed and walked downstairs.

The house was quiet.

Too quiet.

There had been a time when mornings meant chaos.

Leo looking for his shoes.

Lily refusing to eat breakfast unless her toast was cut into triangles.

Arthur standing at the kitchen island, drinking coffee while pretending to read the newspaper.

Now the kitchen belonged to silence.

Sarah opened the refrigerator.

There was milk.

Eggs.

Butter.

She paused.

Then smiled despite herself.

Pancakes.

She took out the ingredients.

At 5:45, Leo came downstairs.

He was twelve now.

He had grown several inches since Arthur went away.

He had also grown quieter.

"You making pancakes?"

Sarah nodded.

"Your dad's birthday."

Leo looked at the counter.

He didn't answer.

A minute later Lily came running downstairs.

She was nine now.

Her hair was longer.

Her voice was different.

But when she smiled, Sarah could still see the little girl who used to press her hand against prison glass.

"Dad's birthday."

It wasn't a question.

Sarah nodded.

Lily immediately grabbed the mixing bowl.

"I'm helping."

Leo sighed.

"You always put too much flour."

"Because flour is good."

"That's not how cooking works."

Sarah laughed.

For a few minutes, the kitchen sounded like itself again.

The pancakes were crooked.

One burned.

Another folded in half.

Lily insisted that the ugly one should be saved for Dad.

Sarah nearly cried.

Instead, she said:

"He'll love it."

Then Lily asked the question Sarah had been dreading.

"Are we seeing him today?"

Sarah stopped.

"I don't know."

"But you said you asked."

"I did."

"Then why can't we go?"

"Because the facility has rules."

Lily's face fell.

Leo stared at the table.

He understood.

That was the worst part.

He understood too much.

Sarah sat between them.

"I promise you, we're going to do everything we can."

"Mom," Leo said quietly, "you said that last time."

Sarah looked at him.

He wasn't angry.

He was tired.

"I'm sorry."

Leo shrugged.

"I know."

Then the doorbell rang.

Sarah frowned.

Nobody was supposed to visit.

She walked to the door.

Two uniformed police officers stood outside.

Sarah's heart stopped.

For eighteen months, the sight of a uniform at her front door had been terrifying.

She opened the door cautiously.

"Mrs. Pendelton?"

"Yes?"

The older officer smiled.

"Don't worry. Nothing is wrong."

Sarah blinked.

"What is this?"

"My name is Officer James Carter. This is Officer Reed."

Sarah looked confused.

"We need to speak with you about Arthur."

Her stomach tightened.

"Is he okay?"

"He's fine."

"Then what happened?"

Officer Carter smiled.

"We've been working with the facility."

Sarah stared at him.

"Why?"

He handed her a sealed envelope.

"Because your husband's birthday falls today."

Sarah's eyes filled immediately.

"Wait."

She opened the envelope.

Inside was a letter.

It explained that, through a special family visitation initiative coordinated between the correctional facility and local law enforcement, Arthur had been approved for an extraordinary supervised family meeting.

Not behind glass.

Not through a telephone.

In person.

For a limited period.

Sarah covered her mouth.

"You got clearance?"

Officer Carter nodded.

"We did."

Sarah started crying.

Lily ran toward her.

"What is it?"

Sarah handed her the letter.

Lily read slowly.

Then looked up.

"Does this mean we can see Daddy?"

Sarah nodded.

"Yes."

Lily screamed.

Leo stood frozen.

Then, unexpectedly, he smiled.

A real smile.

The first Sarah had seen in weeks.

"Today?"

"Today."

Leo looked at the clock.

"We have to go."

Sarah laughed through her tears.

"Apparently."

Lily ran upstairs.

"What do I wear?"

"Something comfortable!"

"My blue dress?"

"Yes."

"The one Daddy likes?"

Sarah's smile broke.

"That one."

Back at the facility, Arthur had no idea.

He spent the morning in the laundry room.

The machines roared around him.

He folded towels.

Sorted uniforms.

Moved sheets.

His hands worked automatically.

At 10:15, Officer Davis appeared.

"Pendelton."

Arthur turned.

"Yes, ma'am?"

"Come with me."

Arthur frowned.

"Why?"

"Administrative meeting."

His heart sank.

"Did I do something?"

"No."

He followed her.

They walked down a corridor he rarely used.

Arthur noticed something unusual.

No other inmates were there.

"Where are we going?"

Davis didn't answer.

They reached a secure door.

Officer Miller stood beside it.

Arthur stopped.

"What's going on?"

Miller looked at him.

For once, the officer's expression was not neutral.

He smiled.

"Happy birthday, Pendelton."

Arthur stared.

He didn't know how to respond.

"Thank you."

Miller opened the door.

Arthur stepped through.

Then froze.

There was a small room beyond it.

A table.

Four chairs.

A birthday cake.

A vase containing flowers.

And three people standing on the other side of the room.

Sarah.

Leo.

Lily.

Arthur couldn't breathe.

Lily screamed.

"Daddy!"

She ran toward him.

For one terrifying second, Arthur didn't move.

His mind couldn't process what his eyes were seeing.

Then he dropped to his knees.

Lily crashed into his arms.

Arthur wrapped himself around her.

She smelled like strawberry shampoo.
