Then I reached for Amy's hand.

“We're leaving.”

She glanced fearfully toward the dining area.

“She's going to be angry.”

Those words hurt me more than any in:sult ever could.

I escorted my wife and son out through the back door, settled them safely inside the car, and called 911.

I explained that people were inside my home without my permission, that my wife had been forced to work while caring for our sick baby, and that I feared for their safety.

I also requested an ambulance.

Within minutes, police officers and paramedics arrived.

From inside the car, I watched the party come to an abrupt stop.

My mother stormed outside, screaming that the house belonged to her.

She shoved one of the officers and refused to identify herself.

My cousin Mason tried to slip out through the front door with a folder hidden beneath his jacket.

The officers stopped him before he could leave.

When they searched the folder, they recovered the original deed to my house.

As I watched my mother being handcuffed, still hurling ins:ults at Amy, I realized the party had never been just another act of humiliation.

It had been part of a plan to steal everything we owned.

I couldn't believe what was about to happen next.

The flashing red and blue lights sliced through the humid Nashville evening, casting jagged shadows across the polished hood of my truck. Inside the cab, the air conditioner hummed loudly, but it couldn't cool the fire burning in my chest. I sat in the driver’s seat with one hand resting gently on Amy’s trembling shoulder and the other cupping Frederick’s small, burning forehead. The paramedics were already treating my son, slipping a cool compress onto his brow while measuring his dangerously high temperature. Every time Frederick let out a weak, whimpering sigh, a cold blade turned in my gut. How had I let this happen? How had I been so blind?

Outside, the scene was absolute chaos. My mother, Teresa, was practically foaming at the mouth, her designer dress rumpled as two metro police officers pinned her arms behind her back. “Get your filthy hands off me!” she shrieked, her voice echoing down the tree-lined suburban street. “Do you know who I am? This is my house! My son gave it to me! Connor, tell them! Tell these idiots to unhand your mother!”

I didn’t say a word. I didn't even roll down the window. I just stared at her, seeing her clearly for the first time in my life. The woman who had raised me wasn't a selfless, sacrifice-making matriarch; she was a predator wearing a smile made of synthetic sympathy.

Just two feet away from her, my cousin Mason was pinned against the side of his lifted pickup truck. An officer was thoroughly searching the heavy leather folder they had seized from under his jacket. Mason kept glancing frantically in my direction, his face pale, sweat dripping down his neck. He wasn't looking at me with anger; he was looking at me with pure, unadulterated terror.
