“You gave a murderer money.”

“I was desperate.”

“You let my father die.”

Richard looked at her.

“No.”

His voice broke.

“Michael died because I was too late.”

Emma stared at him.

Richard continued.

“Your father discovered the payments.”

“He thought I was working with Mercer.”

“You weren't?”

“No.”

Richard reached beneath his pillow.

He pulled out another letter.

“Michael confronted me.”

“What happened?”

“I told him about Olivia.”

“And?”

“Michael understood.”

Emma looked at the letter.

Richard said:

“He told me he would help.”

“Then why did Mercer kill him?”

“Because Mercer discovered that Michael had hidden the original list.”

Emma's eyes widened.

“Where?”

Richard looked at her.

“I never knew.”

Emma remembered the note.

Richard knows where the original list is.

She understood.

“He doesn't know.”

“What?”

“Michael didn't leave the list with you.”

Emma pulled out her father's photograph.

On the back was a handwritten number.

She stared at it.

Then she realized something.

The number wasn't a room.

It was a date.

April 17.

Her birthday.

Her father's clue had been inside her all along.

 The Truth Underneath

Emma returned to her mother's house.

She opened the old boxes.

Birth certificate.

Baby photographs.

Hospital records.

A bracelet.

A stuffed rabbit.

Then she found something she had never seen before.

A children's book.

It had belonged to her father.

She opened the cover.

A note was written inside.

April 17.

Her birthday.

She turned the page.

Nothing.

Another.

Nothing.

Then she noticed the binding.

It was thicker than normal.

Emma carefully opened it.

A tiny memory card fell onto the table.

Diana gasped.

“That's it.”

Emma inserted it into her laptop.

A video appeared.

Michael Blake sat in front of the camera.

He looked tired.

But alive.

Emma pressed play.

“If you're watching this, then my daughter is old enough.”

Emma began crying.

Michael smiled.

“Emma, I don't know whether you'll ever know me.”

He paused.

“I hope you do.”

He explained everything.

Mercer.

Richard.

Olivia.

The payments.

The corruption.

But then came the final revelation.

Richard had not been innocent.

He had participated in one transaction.

Not because he wanted money.

Because he was afraid.

Years earlier, Mercer had threatened to expose Richard's own financial crimes.

Richard had paid him to bury the information.

Michael discovered it.

He could have destroyed Richard.

Instead, he gave him a chance to cooperate.

Richard accepted.

The two men began working together.

Then Michael discovered Olivia.

He realized Mercer had been using her as leverage against Richard for years.

Michael planned to rescue her.

That was why he died.

But Michael had anticipated his own death.

He had created a complete archive.

Every name.

Every payment.

Every recorded conversation.

Everything.

And he had hidden it somewhere Mercer would never search.

Not in a bank.

Not in a safe.

Not with Richard.

With Emma.

The memory card contained coordinates.

A storage facility.

Unit 417.

Emma stared.

“That number wasn't a room.”

Diana shook her head.

“No.”

“It was a key.”

They drove there with federal agents.

Unit 417 was small.

Inside were boxes.

Hundreds of them.

Photographs.

Hard drives.

Documents.

Cassette tapes.

Letters.

A complete record of twenty-seven years of corruption.

Christine stared.

“This could take down half the network.”

Emma looked at her.

“Then let it.”

The investigation lasted eleven months.

Mercer was convicted.

Several executives went to prison.

Three corrupt officials resigned before being indicted.

Two police officers entered witness protection.

Richard Weston testified.

He admitted his crimes.

He accepted responsibility for the money he had paid.

He also testified against Mercer.

And Olivia was found.

She had been living under another name in Vancouver.

When Richard saw her, he collapsed into tears.

Emma watched from a distance.

Olivia looked at her.

“You're Emma?”

“Yes.”

“My father talks about you.”

Emma smiled.

“He's your father too.”

Olivia nodded.

For a moment, neither knew what to say.

Then Olivia hugged her.

Emma held her.

Two women connected by a secret neither had asked for.

Two daughters.

One father.

A lifetime stolen from both of them.

But not forever.

 What She Saved

One year after the morning in the rain, Emma returned to the Weston Financial Center.

The rain was falling again.

She stood beneath the same awning.

She remembered the ruined résumé.

The unconscious man.

The strangers filming.

The ambulance.

The phone call.

The daughter.

Everything had started there.

But this time, Emma wasn't carrying a résumé.

She was carrying a folder containing the final report from the federal investigation.

She had been offered a position at a legal nonprofit specializing in financial crimes and victim advocacy.

She accepted.

Not because of Richard.

Not because of Mercer.

Because of Michael.

She entered the building.

The security guard recognized her.

“Miss Blake.”

She smiled.

“Good morning.”

The elevator carried her to the thirty-second floor.

Richard was waiting.

He had recovered physically, though he looked older.

Much older.

He stood beside the window.

“You came.”

“I said I would.”
