She planned to move the money overseas before Lily’s DNA test was completed.
The gala was not merely a celebration.
It was a farewell party for property Eleanor no longer legally controlled.
Charles grabbed my arm.
“You knew all of this?”
I looked at his hand.
He released me.
“You married me while hiding that Lily might be my niece?”
“I learned that after we became engaged.”
“You should have told me.”
“Your father warned me not to.”
“My father was dead.”
“Your father did not trust you.”
The words struck him.
“Why?”
“Because he knew you were helping Eleanor move foundation money.”
Charles’s face turned pale.
“That’s not true.”
I removed my phone.
“I brought the recordings.”
Eleanor lunged toward me.
Security blocked her.
The main ballroom screen turned on.
William Ashford appeared.
He sat inside his study three weeks before his death.
His body looked weak.
His voice was clear.
“My name is William Henry Ashford. I am recording this because my wife and son betrayed the purpose of our foundation.”
Charles stumbled backward.
William continued.
“Eleanor diverted charitable funds into private accounts. Charles discovered the transfers. Instead of reporting them, he requested a share.”
Guests turned toward my husband.
He shook his head.
“This has been edited.”
The video changed.
A hidden camera showed Charles sitting across from Eleanor.
“If Caroline’s child is alive,” he said, “the trust passes to her.”
Eleanor answered, “Then we make certain the child is never identified.”
“And Victoria?”
“She knows too much.”
“What do you want me to do?”
“Marry her.”
My body went cold even though I had heard the recording before.
Charles had not met me by accident.
Eleanor sent him.
Their plan was to gain access to my adoption files, watch Lily, and find William’s evidence.
My marriage had begun as surveillance.
Charles looked at me desperately.
“Victoria, it changed.”
I said nothing.
“I did fall in love with you.”
“After you married me to protect stolen money?”
“I never wanted Lily hurt.”
“You watched your mother exclude her for five years.”
“I was trying to keep the peace.”
“No. You were waiting to discover what I knew.”
William’s recording continued.
“If anything happens to Victoria or the child, the complete financial archive will be sent to federal investigators.”
At that exact moment, the ballroom doors opened.
Three investigators entered.
Behind them walked Mr. Whitmore, William’s former attorney.
He carried a sealed evidence case.
Eleanor’s composure collapsed.
