Every time he closed his eyes, he saw Lena's calm expression.

No anger.

No desperation.

Just control.

He hated it.

He attacked the heavy bag harder.

Again.

Again.

Again.

Then Robert walked in.

“Enough.”

Damian stopped.

“You knew.”

Robert said nothing.

“You knew she could fight.”

“I knew she had experience.”

“You knew who Caleb was.”

Robert sighed.

“Yes.”

Damian stared.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because it wasn't your business.”

“You made me look like an idiot.”

Robert's expression hardened.

“You did that yourself.”

Damian flinched.

Robert walked toward him.

“You've been confusing talent with character.”

Damian looked away.

“You think I'm the problem.”

“I think you're becoming the problem.”

Silence.

Then Damian asked:

“Who is Caleb?”

Robert sat down.

“Twenty years ago, Caleb Brooks was one of the best instructors in this region.”

“Better than me?”

Robert looked directly at him.

“Yes.”

Damian's jaw tightened.

“He was also the person who challenged the way this academy operated.”

“What happened?”

“He left.”

“Why?”

Robert hesitated.

“Because I made him.”

Damian stared.

For the first time, he understood that the academy's history was more complicated than he had imagined.

The Seventeen-Year-Old

Noah didn't come to training that Monday.

His mother called the academy.

She said he was sick.

Lena knew that wasn't true.

She visited him that evening.

Noah opened the door wearing sweatpants and a hoodie.

“I'm not going back.”

Lena didn't ask why.

She already knew.

“They laughed at me.”

“They shouldn't have.”

“I couldn't do the move.”

“That happens.”

“Not to Damian.”

Lena smiled.

“Damian couldn't do everything the first time either.”

Noah looked at her.

“How do you know?”

“Because everyone starts somewhere.”

He sat down.

“My mom says I should quit.”

“What do you want?”

Noah didn't answer.

“That's what matters,” Lena said.

He finally looked up.

“I want to learn.”

“Then don't let one bad instructor decide what you become.”

The next evening, Noah returned.

But Damian wasn't teaching.

Robert had temporarily removed him from beginner classes.

Caleb volunteered to teach.

He began with something simple.

Posture.

Balance.

Breathing.

Noah made mistakes.

Caleb corrected them without laughing.

When Noah failed again, Caleb said:

“Good.”

Noah looked confused.

“Good?”

“Now we know what needs work.”

Lena watched from the corner.

For the first time in years, she remembered why she had loved martial arts.

Not tournaments.

Not medals.

Not applause.

Teaching.

Helping someone discover that they were stronger than they thought.

Damian watched from the hallway.

He saw Noah smiling.

He saw Lena smiling.

And something inside him tightened.

He had never considered that people might train because they wanted confidence rather than trophies.

He had always thought fear made better students.

Now he was beginning to question everything.

The Challenge

Three days later, Damian asked for another match.

Not against Lena.

Against Caleb.

The announcement spread through the academy within minutes.

Damian was thirty-one.

Caleb was sixty-five.

The younger fighters expected an easy victory.

Lena didn't.

She knew better.

Caleb agreed.

But he made one condition.

“No audience.”

Damian objected.

“I want everyone to see.”

Caleb shook his head.

“That's exactly why you shouldn't fight me.”

Damian didn't understand.

“You're afraid?”

“No.”

Caleb looked at him.

“I'm trying to give you a chance to learn something without an audience watching your ego.”

Damian's face reddened.

But he accepted.

The next morning, they trained alone.

Lena watched.

Damian attacked quickly.

Caleb moved slowly.

Yet every attack missed.

Damian tried again.

Caleb redirected him.

Again.

Same result.

Finally Damian stopped.

“How?”

Caleb smiled.

“You're fighting me.”

“Yes.”

“No.”

Caleb pointed toward Damian's chest.
