“What is that?”

Hammer didn't answer.

He removed a hidden panel.

Inside was a black plastic container.

His hands became unsteady.

He opened it.

A flash drive.

A stack of folded documents.

Photographs.

A handwritten notebook.

And a small envelope addressed to Emily.

She opened the envelope.

Inside was a single sentence.

I wanted more time.

Emily pressed the paper against her chest.

Hammer picked up the flash drive.

“Now we know why he was afraid.”

“No,” Emily whispered.

“We know why someone wanted him afraid.”

Hammer looked at her.

“There's a difference.”

And somewhere across the city, a man named Victor Hale received a phone call.

“Daniel Carter's wife found something.”

Victor went silent.

Then he asked:

“Who else knows?”

The answer came.

“Ray Dawson.”

Victor's expression hardened.

“Then this isn't over.”

Fourteen Minutes

The first file on the flash drive was a spreadsheet.

The second was a photograph.

The third was a bank transfer.

The fourth was a video.

Emily didn't open the video.

Not yet.

She wanted to understand what she was seeing first.

Daniel had spent months documenting irregularities in shipments from Northstar Medical Supply.

There were hundreds of pages.

Invoices.

Delivery manifests.

Hospital inventory reports.

Medication batch numbers.

Emails.

Bank transfers.

Names.

Dates.

And handwritten notes.

Emily looked at one page for nearly ten minutes.

“What's this?”

Hammer leaned over.

“Duplicate batch number.”

She pointed.

“Two shipments?”

“Same batch.”

“Same medication.”

“Different delivery dates.”

She looked at him.

“That's impossible.”

“Exactly.”

A knock came at the garage door.

Hammer's hand moved instinctively toward his belt.

Emily froze.

The door opened.

A man in his thirties stepped inside.

He was thin, nervous, and wearing a hospital security uniform.

“My name is Ethan Cole.”

Hammer frowned.

“How did you find us?”

“I knew Daniel.”

Emily stepped forward.

“How?”

“I worked security at St. Vincent's.”

Hammer's eyes narrowed.

“Why are you here?”

Ethan swallowed.

“Because I deleted fourteen minutes.”

Emily stared at him.

“What?”

“Hospital basement camera footage.”

Hammer stepped closer.

“What fourteen minutes?”

“The night Daniel died.”

The garage became silent.

Ethan continued.

“I was told to erase it.”

“By who?”

“Victor Hale.”

Hammer's jaw tightened.

“Why?”

“Because the camera showed something he didn't want anyone to see.”

Emily felt cold.

“What did it show?”

Ethan looked at her.

“Daniel.”

“Doing what?”

“Walking into the basement.”

“With Noah.”

Emily's breath stopped.

“Why was my son there?”

Ethan shook his head.

“I don't know.”

Hammer said:

“You said the footage was deleted.”

“It was.”

“Then how do you know?”

“Because I copied part of it before I deleted it.”

Ethan pulled a phone from his pocket.

His hands shook.

He played a video.

The image was grainy.

A hospital basement corridor.

Daniel entered the frame.

He was wearing a gray hoodie.

Noah was beside him.

Daniel crouched and said something.

The audio was faint.

Then a nurse appeared.

Daniel handed Noah something.

A blue bracelet.

Emily covered her mouth.

The video continued.

Daniel looked directly toward the camera.

For a second, his eyes seemed to meet Emily's through time.

Then the screen jumped.

Fourteen minutes disappeared.

The video resumed.

Daniel was gone.

Noah was being escorted upstairs.

Emily looked at Ethan.

“What happened during those fourteen minutes?”

“I don't know.”

“You were there.”

“I wasn't.”

“Then who was?”

Ethan looked at Hammer.

“Dr. Stephen Rowe.”

Hammer's face hardened.

Emily knew that name.

Dr. Rowe had been one of Daniel's physicians.

He had signed several documents after Daniel's death.

“Why would he be in the basement?”

Ethan shook his head.

“I don't know.”

Hammer stared at him.

“Tell the truth.”

“I am.”

“Then tell us why you erased the footage.”

Ethan's eyes filled with tears.

“Because they threatened my daughter.”

Emily went still.

“What?”

“They knew where she went to school.”

Ethan's voice broke.

“My daughter is seven. Victor Hale showed me a photograph of her getting off the school bus.”

Hammer's expression became terrifyingly calm.

“He threatened a child.”

“Yes.”

“And you obeyed.”

“I was afraid.”

Emily looked at the screen again.

“Did Daniel know?”

Ethan nodded.

“He saw me that night.”

“What did he say?”

“He said, 'If you're scared, Ethan, I understand. But don't stay scared forever.'”

Emily closed her eyes.

That sounded like Daniel.

Always believing people could be better than their fear.

Hammer picked up the flash drive.

“What else is on here?”

Ethan pointed.

“The video.”

Emily looked at Hammer.

“Play it.”

The screen showed Daniel sitting inside the Harley garage.

He looked exhausted.

His face was thinner.

His hands trembled.

But his voice was steady.

“If you're watching this, something happened.”

He paused.

“I don't know if I will be alive when you see it.”

Emily began crying.

Daniel continued.

“I found evidence that medications intended for cancer patients were being diverted, relabeled, and entered into hospital records as legitimate deliveries.”

Hammer clenched his fists.

Daniel looked away.

“I don't know how high this goes.”

He took a breath.

“I know someone inside the hospital is changing records.”

He paused.

“I know someone outside the hospital is paying for silence.”

Then Daniel looked directly into the camera.

“Emily, I'm sorry.”

Emily broke down.

“I wanted more time.”

Daniel's voice softened.

“I wanted to watch Noah graduate. I wanted to teach him to drive. I wanted to embarrass him when he brought his first girlfriend home.”

A faint smile appeared.

“But if you're watching this, I probably didn't get that time.”

He reached down.

A blue hospital bracelet was visible around his wrist.

“I know you're going to ask why I didn't tell you.”

He looked directly into the lens.

“Because I wanted to remain your husband.”

His voice cracked.

“Not your patient.”

Emily pressed both hands over her mouth.

Daniel continued.

“And Noah.”

The camera angle shifted slightly.

“You're going to grow up.”

Daniel smiled.
