"I'm sore."

"Who did it?"

Samuel looked toward Derek.

Michael followed his gaze.

The restaurant became completely silent again.

Derek stood.

"Listen—"

Michael raised one hand.

"Don't."

Derek stopped.

Michael looked at the manager.

"What happened?"

Daniel explained.

He described the argument.

The shove.

The fall.

Michael listened without interruption.

Then he looked at Samuel.

"Did he touch you before that?"

"No."

"Did you threaten him?"

"No."

"Did you provoke him?"

Samuel gave his son a tired look.

"I told him to have a good evening."

Michael nodded.

Then he turned toward Derek.

"I want you to understand something."

Derek crossed his arms.

"What?"

"You assaulted my father."

"I pushed him."

"That is an assault."

"He was disrespectful."

Michael's expression remained calm.

"That doesn't give you the right to touch him."

Derek stepped closer.

"Are you threatening me?"

"No."

Michael's answer was immediate.

"I'm giving you an opportunity."

"An opportunity for what?"

"To leave."

Derek laughed.

"You think you can tell me what to do?"

Michael glanced at his father.

Samuel quietly said:

"Michael."

His son looked back.

"Yes?"

"Don't."

Michael nodded.

He turned toward Derek again.

"My father doesn't want a fight."

Derek smirked.

"Good."

"But you should know something."

"What?"

Michael's voice became colder.

"Neither do I."

The Badge

Derek didn't leave.

Instead, he stood there, surrounded by his friends.

"You know," Derek said, "your father shouldn't be wandering around picking fights with people."

Michael stared at him.

"My father didn't pick anything."

"He mouthed off."

"That's your justification?"

Derek shrugged.

"He should learn respect."

Samuel closed his eyes.

He knew exactly where this was going.

Michael had inherited many things from Eleanor.

Her smile.

Her patience.

Her stubbornness.

But when Michael was angry, he became frighteningly quiet.

"Derek," Kyle whispered.

"What?"

"Let's go."

Derek ignored him.

Michael reached into his jacket.

Derek stiffened.

But Michael didn't pull out a weapon.

He pulled out a wallet.

He opened it.

Inside was a military identification card.

He didn't wave it around.

He simply showed it to the manager.

Daniel's eyes widened.

Michael closed the wallet.

Derek frowned.

"What are you?"

"That doesn't matter."

"It matters to me."

"No."

Michael looked directly into his eyes.

"What matters is that my father is seventy-four years old and you knocked him to the floor because your ego couldn't tolerate him ignoring you."

Derek's jaw tightened.

"You think that badge scares me?"

"It isn't supposed to."

"Then what is it for?"

"Identification."

Michael stepped back.

"I'm not here to scare you."

Derek laughed.

"You should be."

"No."

Michael looked at his father.

"I'm here because he called."

That sentence changed something.

Samuel watched his son carefully.

There was pride in his eyes.

But also warning.

Michael understood.

His father didn't want him to become violent.

He had spent his entire life teaching Michael that strength was not measured by how hard a man could hit.

It was measured by how much power he could possess without abusing it.

Michael took a breath.

Then he said:

"Call the police."

Derek looked startled.

"What?"

Michael nodded toward the manager.

"Call them."

Daniel immediately reached for the phone.

Derek suddenly became less confident.

"Wait."

Michael said nothing.

Derek looked around.

People were staring.

His friends were no longer laughing.

The atmosphere had changed.

The man he had shoved was not alone anymore.

And Derek realized that for the first time that evening, he was.

What Samuel Had Hidden

The police arrived twelve minutes later.

Officer Rachel Carter entered first.

She was followed by Officer James Reed.

Daniel explained what happened.

Several customers provided statements.

A woman at the next table had recorded part of the incident on her phone.

The video clearly showed Derek shoving Samuel.

There was no ambiguity.

Derek tried to explain.

"He was provoking me."

Rachel looked at him.

"By sitting?"

Derek said nothing.

She turned toward Samuel.

"Sir, would you like to press charges?"

Samuel looked at Michael.

His son remained silent.

Samuel sighed.

"Yes."

Derek's face changed.

"Come on."

Samuel looked at him.

"You hurt me."

"I barely touched you."

"You put me on the floor."

Derek looked away.

Samuel continued.

"I'm not doing this because I hate you."

Derek glanced back.

"I'm doing it because someone needs to teach you that other people's dignity isn't yours to destroy."

Rachel nodded.

She placed handcuffs on Derek.

Kyle and Mason were allowed to leave.

As Derek was escorted out, he turned toward Michael.

"This isn't over."

Michael didn't respond.

The doors closed.

The restaurant slowly began breathing again.

Customers returned to their meals.

Conversations restarted.

But something remained in the air.

Daniel approached Samuel.

"Are you sure you're okay?"

Samuel nodded.

"Yes."

Michael looked at his father.

"You're going to the hospital."

"No."

"Dad."

"I'm fine."

"You hit your shoulder."

"I've had worse."
