Daniel said nothing.

Logan looked at Naomi.

“You told him about Saturday?”

Naomi's eyes narrowed.

“I told him nothing.”

Logan scoffed.

“Of course.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“Don't.”

One word.

Logan stopped.

“You think you're intimidating?”

“No.”

“Then why do you keep acting like you own the room?”

“I don't own anything.”

Daniel looked around.

“This is Marcus's academy.”

Then he looked at Logan.

“You're only a guest here.”

Logan laughed.

“I've won more tournaments than anyone in this building.”

Daniel nodded.

“That's true.”

“And you?”

Daniel's eyes were calm.

“What have you won?”

Marcus looked sharply at Logan.

Daniel answered.

“Enough.”

Logan smiled.

“That's convenient.”

Daniel reached into his jacket.

He pulled out a small folded photograph.

He placed it on the table.

Logan glanced down.

Then froze.

It was a photograph from a national championship.

A much younger Daniel stood in the center.

The winner.

The name beneath the photograph was clearly visible.

Daniel Cross.

National Submission Champion.

Logan looked up.

“No.”

Daniel said nothing.

“You're him.”

“Yes.”

Marcus sighed.

“I was going to tell you.”

Logan stared.

“You trained Marcus.”

“Yes.”

“You were his coach.”

“Yes.”

Logan looked again at the photograph.

The older man in front of him suddenly seemed different.

Not physically.

But in the way the room reacted to him.

Marcus respected him.

Naomi watched him.

Even the students had gone quiet.

Logan folded his arms.

“That's ancient history.”

Daniel nodded.

“Correct.”

“Doesn't mean you can fight now.”

“No.”

“Then what are you proving?”

Daniel smiled.

“Nothing.”

He turned toward the door.

“That is why you should be worried.”

Logan frowned.

Daniel continued.

“The person who needs to prove something is usually the easiest person to control.”

Then he walked away.

Logan stood there.

For the first time in years, the champion felt uncertain.

And uncertainty made him angry.

The Challenge

By Saturday, the entire academy had heard about Daniel Cross.

The story grew with every telling.

Some said he had been a national champion.

Others claimed he had defeated professional fighters.

Someone said he had once broken a man's arm in twelve seconds.

By noon, the truth had become almost impossible to separate from rumor.

Logan hated it.

He hated even more that people were talking about Daniel instead of him.

So he made a decision.

He challenged him.

The challenge was announced during the afternoon session.

Logan stood in the center of the mat.

“Daniel Cross.”

Everyone turned.

Daniel was sitting against the wall.

He had come only to watch.

Logan continued.

“You said I don't understand control.”

Daniel looked at him.

“I said you didn't.”

“Then show me.”

Marcus immediately stood.

“Logan.”

“No.”

Logan's voice was firm.

“I want this.”

Daniel slowly stood.

Marcus walked toward him.

“Don't.”

Daniel looked at Marcus.

“Why?”

“You know why.”

Daniel nodded.

Then he looked at Logan.

“What do you want?”

“A match.”

“Why?”

“To settle this.”

Daniel smiled.

“Nothing gets settled by winning a match.”

Logan's face tightened.

“Scared?”

The students reacted.

Daniel remained silent.

Logan stepped closer.

“You're old.”

The room became uncomfortable.

“You haven't competed in decades.”

Daniel nodded.

“All true.”

“You can't possibly be the same fighter.”

“No.”

Logan smiled.

“Then prove it.”

Daniel looked toward Naomi.

She was standing near the edge of the mat.

She remembered the words from Saturday.

You don't belong here.

Then she remembered Daniel's answer.

You belong here if you want to learn.

Naomi stepped forward.

“Daniel.”

He looked at her.

“Don't do this for me.”

Daniel smiled.

“I wouldn't.”

Logan frowned.

“Then do it for yourself.”

Daniel considered him.

Finally, he removed his jacket.

Underneath was a plain gray T-shirt.

He took off his boots.

He stepped onto the mat barefoot.

The room erupted in whispers.

Marcus closed his eyes.

He knew what was coming.

The match began.

Logan attacked immediately.

Fast.

Aggressive.

He shot forward, expecting Daniel's age to slow him down.

Daniel moved.

Not backward.

Sideways.

Logan missed.

The audience gasped.

Logan recovered quickly.

He attacked again.

Daniel redirected him.

Again.

Again.

Logan's frustration grew.

He was faster.

Stronger.

Younger.

Yet Daniel seemed to know where he was going before he moved.

After two minutes, Logan finally secured a dominant position.

He smiled.

“Got you.”

Daniel said nothing.

Logan applied pressure.

Daniel remained calm.

The crowd began cheering.

Logan increased the pressure.

Daniel waited.

Then he moved.

One shift.

One turn.

One change of angle.

Suddenly Logan was on his back.

Daniel had control.

The entire exchange had lasted less than five seconds.

Logan struggled.

Daniel held him.

Not painfully.

Precisely.

“You're strong,” Daniel said.

Logan grunted.

“You're fast.”

He tried to escape.

Daniel adjusted.

“But you're impatient.”

Logan pushed harder.

Daniel moved again.

Logan found himself trapped.

He realized something terrible.

Daniel was not fighting his strength.

He was using it against him.

“Tap,” Daniel said quietly.

Logan refused.

Daniel did not increase the pressure.

He simply waited.

“Tap.”

Logan's breathing became heavier.

The crowd became silent.

Then Logan remembered Saturday.

Naomi tapping.

His own hand refusing to release.

The irony hit him.

Daniel was giving him every opportunity to stop.

Finally Logan tapped.

Daniel released immediately.

He stood.

Logan rolled away.

The room remained silent.

Daniel offered his hand.

Logan stared at it.

Then accepted.

Daniel pulled him up.

“You could become very good.”

Logan looked confused.

“You mean that?”

“Yes.”

“After all this?”

“Especially after all this.”

Daniel picked up his jacket.

“You have ability.”

Logan looked at him.

“Then why do you hate me?”

Daniel stopped.
