“That I can fight.”

Marcus's expression softened.

“You don't owe anyone your history.”

“I know.”

“Then don't give it to them.”

Naomi looked through the doorway.

Logan was speaking with several students.

Already telling his version.

Already rebuilding the story.

Marcus said:

“He'll try again.”

“I know.”

“Not physically.”

Naomi looked at him.

“Then how?”

“Reputation.”

She nodded.

That was exactly what she feared.

Naomi's past had been built around anonymity.

Years earlier, she had been one of the youngest competitors in a national submission circuit.

She had won tournaments under the nickname “N.C.”

Then, at twenty-four, she disappeared.

Not because she lost.

Because she won.

Her final competition had ended with an opponent suffering a serious injury.

The injury was not her fault.

The opponent had refused to release.

But the footage had spread.

People argued about her.

Some called her dangerous.

Others called her brilliant.

Naomi hated both descriptions.

So she walked away.

She became invisible.

That was how she wanted it.

Until Logan Price decided she needed to prove she belonged.

The Challenge

By late afternoon, the open house had nearly ended.

But Logan wasn't finished.

He found Naomi near the parking lot.

“You leaving?”

She stopped.

Marcus stood beside her.

“Yes.”

Logan smiled.

“You should finish the round.”

“No.”

“You embarrassed me.”

Naomi stared at him.

“You did that yourself.”

Logan's jaw tightened.

“Everybody thinks you beat me.”

“I didn't.”

“That doesn't matter.”

“It should.”

He stepped closer.

Marcus moved between them.

Not aggressively.

Just enough.

Logan stopped.

“You really going to hide behind him?”

Naomi answered.

“No.”

She stepped around Marcus.

“I don't need to hide.”

Logan smiled.

“Then come back inside.”

“No.”

“One round.”

“No.”

“Afraid?”

Naomi looked at him.

“You already showed me what you do when someone taps.”

That sentence hit harder than any strike.

Logan's face went cold.

“You think you're better than me?”

“No.”

“Then why won't you prove it?”

“Because I don't need to.”

Logan looked toward Marcus.

“Maybe your uncle knows you're not good enough.”

Marcus finally spoke.

“Don't confuse refusal with inability.”

Logan stared.

“What does that mean?”

“It means she doesn't owe you a match.”

Raymond appeared behind Logan.

“Enough.”

Logan turned.

“Coach—”

“You're done for today.”

Logan looked around.

“Because of her?”

“Because of you.”

The parking lot went quiet.

Raymond continued:

“You ignored a tap in front of a hundred people.”

Logan's voice dropped.

“You're taking her side.”

“No.”

Raymond shook his head.

“I'm taking the academy's rules seriously.”

Logan looked at Naomi.

“This isn't over.”

Naomi said nothing.

Marcus did.

“It is for tonight.”

Logan walked away.

But he didn't look defeated.

He looked like someone making a plan.

The Video

By Monday morning, the video had spread.

Someone had uploaded thirty-seven seconds.

The title read:

STATE CHAMPION CHOKES NEW WOMAN AFTER SHE TAPS

The comments multiplied.

Some defended Logan.

Some defended Naomi.

Most didn't know the full story.

Logan posted his own statement.

He said the sequence had been controlled.

He said Naomi had entered an advanced round voluntarily.

He said there had been no intention to hurt anyone.

The video did not show the first tap clearly.

It did show the second.

And the third.

Then it showed Marcus stepping forward.

That was enough.

The clip of Marcus saying “Let her go” became the part people remembered.

Ironwood's owner received hundreds of messages.

Raymond called Naomi.

“You don't have to respond.”

“I won't.”

“Good.”

“But there's another problem.”

“What?”

“Someone identified me.”

Silence.

Raymond understood.

“From the old footage?”

“Yes.”

By Tuesday, Naomi's old competition name was circulating.

N.C.

Someone posted photographs from a tournament twelve years earlier.

The caption read:

You all thought she was new.

Then another:

Naomi Carter. Former national submission finalist.

Logan saw it.

And for the first time, he understood who he had actually challenged.

But instead of stepping back, he smiled.

Because he had always believed pressure made people reveal themselves.

Now he had an opportunity.

He challenged Naomi publicly.
