His supervisor was Daniel Reeves, the assistant branch manager.

Daniel was forty-seven, impeccably dressed, and had perfected the expression of a man who believed he was always the most important person in the room.

He approached Counter Seven.

"Ms. Brooks?"

"Yes."

"I'm Daniel Reeves. Assistant branch manager."

Elena nodded.

"Nice to meet you."

Daniel offered a professional smile.

"I understand you're attempting to deposit a certified check for $4.8 million."

"That's correct."

"We'll need to verify several things."

"I expected that."

Daniel glanced at Andrew.

"Where did you say you obtained the check?"

"I didn't."

Andrew's eyebrows rose.

Daniel looked back at her.

"Excuse me?"

"I said I didn't tell him."

There was silence.

Elena reached into her handbag and removed a thin folder.

"I have the documentation here. The check is certified. The issuing bank has already confirmed its validity. The transaction agreement, purchase documents, tax documentation, and legal correspondence are all included."

She placed the folder on the counter.

Daniel looked at it.

Then at her.

"May I ask what the transaction concerns?"

"Certainly."

Elena opened the folder.

"The sale of my company."

Andrew, standing behind Daniel, shifted uncomfortably.

Daniel studied her.

"You own a company?"

"Yes."

"What kind?"

"Logistics technology."

"What's the name?"

"Brooks Transit Systems."

Andrew's expression changed.

He knew the name.

Everyone in the regional business community knew it.

Brooks Transit Systems had grown from a tiny operation into a major transportation technology company serving warehouses, hospitals, and manufacturers across several states.

But Elena Brooks?

That name didn't match the picture Andrew had formed in his head.

Daniel stared at her.

"You're the owner of Brooks Transit Systems?"

"I was."

Daniel blinked.

"What do you mean, you were?"

"The company was acquired last month."

Andrew looked down.

Daniel swallowed.

"By Meridian Logistics?"

"Yes."

Daniel knew Meridian.

Their acquisitions were normally reported in financial publications.

"Ms. Brooks, I apologize. I wasn't aware."

Elena smiled faintly.

"That's okay."

But Daniel didn't sound satisfied.

He picked up the folder.

"I'll need to have our compliance department review this."

"Of course."

"It may take some time."

"That's fine."

"We might need you to return tomorrow."

Elena looked at him.

"Why?"

Daniel hesitated.

"Because a transaction of this size requires extensive review."

"I understand."

She reached into her bag again.

"That's why I scheduled the appointment."

Daniel frowned.

"You had an appointment?"

"Yes."

"With whom?"

Elena took out a printed email.

Daniel read it.

His face went pale.

The appointment was with Jonathan Harrington.

Not a branch manager.

Not a regional manager.

The chairman of Harrington & Cole Bank.

Andrew stared at the paper.

Daniel looked at Elena.

"You were expecting Mr. Harrington?"

"At ten-thirty."

Daniel glanced at the wall clock.

10:34.

He suddenly became aware that Margaret Cole was standing only a few yards away.

She had been listening.

Margaret stepped forward.

"Elena?"

Elena turned.

"Yes?"

Margaret smiled.

"I'm Margaret Cole."

Elena's expression softened.

"I know who you are."

Margaret laughed quietly.

"Then we're already ahead of everyone else."

Daniel looked nervous.

"Mrs. Coleโ€”"

Margaret raised one hand.

"Daniel."

He stopped.

Margaret turned to Elena.

"Jonathan is upstairs. He asked me to meet him before the board session."

She looked at the check.

"Is that the $4.8 million?"

"Yes."

Margaret studied Elena for several seconds.

"Would you mind coming with me?"

Elena glanced at Andrew.

Then Daniel.

Then Margaret.

"Not at all."

She picked up her handbag.

As she walked away from Counter Seven, Andrew remained frozen behind the desk.

He had spent fifteen minutes questioning whether Elena could possibly own a $4.8 million check.

He had never considered the possibility that the bank might need her more than she needed it.

Jonathan Harrington was waiting in a conference room on the twenty-third floor.

At seventy-one, Jonathan had the calm presence of someone who had spent decades making decisions that affected thousands of people.

When Margaret entered with Elena, he stood.

"Ms. Brooks."

"Mr. Harrington."

They shook hands.

Jonathan looked at the check.

Then at Elena.

"Is everything all right?"

Elena nodded.

"It will be."

Jonathan noticed the careful wording.

He looked at Margaret.

"What happened?"

Margaret closed the door.

"Your front desk almost rejected a $4.8 million deposit."

Jonathan's eyebrows rose.

"Almost?"

"Because the customer didn't look like a person carrying four million dollars."

Jonathan looked at Elena.

"I'm sorry."

Elena sat down.

"I didn't come here for an apology."

Jonathan leaned forward.

"Then why did you come?"

Elena placed another document on the table.

It was a copy of her acquisition agreement.

At the bottom was a clause highlighted in yellow.

Jonathan read it.

His face slowly changed.

"Where did you get this?"

"From the same company that issued the check."

Jonathan looked up.

"What does this have to do with us?"

Elena's voice became quiet.

"The check is legitimate."

"I assumed so."

"But the money behind it may not be."

Silence filled the room.

Margaret leaned forward.

"What are you saying?"

Elena looked directly at Jonathan.

"I'm saying someone used my company to move money through your bank."

Jonathan's expression hardened.

"Do you have evidence?"

"Yes."

She opened her folder.
