"Yes."
Andrew shook his head.
"That isn't something we normally do."
"Then tell me what you normally do."
He stared at her.
"We normally refer transactions of this size to private banking."
"Fine."
"I'll call someone."
"Thank you."
Andrew picked up the phone.
But before he dialed, a woman approached from the private banking entrance.
She was in her early fifties, dressed in a dark navy suit.
Her name was Margaret Hale.
She was the branch's senior vice president.
Andrew immediately straightened.
"Ms. Hale."
Margaret looked at him.
"What seems to be the issue?"
Andrew glanced toward Elena.
"This customer has presented a certified check for four point eight million dollars."
Margaret's eyebrows rose.
"Is that so?"
"Yes."
Margaret looked at Elena.
Then at the check.
Unlike Andrew, she did not laugh.
She held out her hand.
"May I?"
Elena handed it to her.
Margaret studied it carefully.
Her expression changed.
Not dramatically.
But Elena noticed.
"You recognize something?" Elena asked.
Margaret looked at the check again.
"I recognize the issuing institution."
"So do I."
Margaret's eyes moved to Elena.
"Would you mind coming into my office?"
Elena shook her head.
"I'd prefer to complete the transaction here."
Andrew looked surprised.
Margaret studied her for another moment.
"Of course."
The lobby had become noticeably quieter.
People were pretending not to listen.
Margaret returned the check.
"We'll verify the instrument."
"That's reasonable."
"And there may be additional questions."
"That's fine."
Andrew leaned toward Margaret.
"Should we contact security?"
The words were quiet.
But not quiet enough.
Elena heard them.
So did Margaret.
Margaret turned slowly.
"Security?"
Andrew swallowed.
"I only meantโ"
"Why?"
Andrew glanced at Elena.
"I thoughtโ"
"You thought what?"
He had no answer.
Elena looked at Margaret.
"I think your associate has already made his opinion clear."
Margaret's face tightened.
"Mr. Miller, step away from the counter."
Andrew froze.
"Ma'am?"
"Now."
He obeyed.
Margaret took his place.
She looked at Elena.
"Ms. Brooks, I apologize."
Elena nodded.
"I accept your apology."
Margaret lowered her voice.
"But I have to tell you something."
"What?"
"A check this size will require more than a routine deposit."
"I expected that."
Margaret looked at the document.
"Who is paying you?"
Elena's expression remained unreadable.
"The Brooks Family Trust."
Margaret went completely still.
For the first time, Elena saw something she had not seen on Andrew's face.
Recognition.
Fear.
Margaret looked up.
"Did you say the Brooks Family Trust?"
"Yes."
Margaret's fingers tightened around the check.
She glanced toward the executive corridor.
Then back at Elena.
"Please wait here."
She disappeared through a glass door.
Elena remained at Counter Seven.
Andrew stood several feet away.
His confidence had vanished.
He kept looking toward the door through which Margaret had disappeared.
Five minutes passed.
Then ten.
Finally, the door opened.
Margaret returned.
But she wasn't alone.
Behind her walked the president of Harrington & Cole's regional division.
Daniel Whitmore.
And the moment he saw Elena, he stopped walking.
His face went pale.
"Elena?"
She looked at him.
"Hello, Daniel."
The entire lobby seemed to freeze.
Andrew stared.
Margaret looked between them.
Daniel slowly approached.
"You came back."
Elena nodded.
"I told you I would."
Andrew's mouth opened.
No words came out.
Daniel looked at the check.
Then at Elena.
"You really decided to deposit it here?"
"That's what I said."
Daniel took a breath.
Then he looked toward Andrew.
"Who was handling this?"
Nobody answered.
Elena did.
"Mr. Miller."
Daniel closed his eyes for a moment.
When he opened them, his expression was no longer surprised.
It was furious.
"Andrew," he said quietly, "do you have any idea who you're speaking to?"
Andrew swallowed.
"No, sir."
Daniel looked at Elena.
"Apparently not."
Then he turned toward the entire lobby.
"Everyone, listen carefully."
The room became silent.
Daniel pointed toward Elena.
"Ms. Brooks is not a suspicious customer."
He paused.
"She is one of the principal owners of the institution that owns this bank."
Andrew's face drained of color.
Daniel continued.
"And that check?"
He looked at Elena.
"That is money from the sale of the Harrington & Cole building itself."
Silence.
Absolute silence.
Elena calmly adjusted the strap of her handbag.
She had not come to humiliate anyone.
She had come to make a deposit.
But sometimes, the truth had a way of humiliating people all by itself.
ย The Woman Nobody Recognized
Three months earlier, Elena Brooks had been sitting in a small conference room on the twenty-third floor of a building overlooking the city.
She had been there with lawyers, accountants, trustees, and investment advisors.
