First came the blinding, high-intensity LED headlights, cutting through the misty rain and creating massive, blooming lens flares that completely washed out the meager red and blue flashes of the wrecked police cruiser. Then came the sheer, terrifying mass of the vehicles.
Eleven matte-black, heavily armored Chevrolet Tahoes roared down the industrial corridor, moving at over eighty miles per hour in a tight, flawless tactical diamond formation. The sound of their engines was deafening, a guttural, synchronized mechanical thunder that drowned out the rain and the wind.
Griggs stumbled backward, his mouth hanging open in sheer terror. He instinctively raised an arm to shield his eyes from the blinding glare, his mind unable to comprehend what was happening. For a brief, insane moment, he thought he was about to be run over by a military convoy.
But the convoy did not hit them.
With breathtaking precision, the lead Tahoe slammed on its brakes, the heavy tires screaming against the wet asphalt as it threw itself into a controlled drift, sliding perfectly into position to block the road ahead. The other ten SUVs instantly broke formation, swarming the crash site like angry hornets.
They executed a textbook tactical perimeter. Two Tahoes boxed in the rear of the police cruiser, effectively trapping it. Four more flanked the sides, their heavy ramming bumpers inches from Griggs's legs. The remaining vehicles formed an outer ring of defense, their amber strobe lights flashing in a mesmerizing, aggressive rhythm.
Griggs was entirely surrounded. The wall of black steel towered over him.
The heavy engines idled with a deep, menacing purr. The air was suddenly thick with the smell of hot brakes and exhaust.
Griggs stood frozen in the center of the mechanical fortress. His bravado, his arrogance, his entire sense of authority evaporated in a single second, leaving behind only a cold, paralyzing dread. He looked at Evelyn Carter.
She had not moved. She stood in the exact same spot, the amber light of the SUVs washing over her mustard-yellow silk blouse, turning her into a glowing, untouchable queen surrounded by her mechanical knights.
The simultaneous clack of eleven heavy, armored car doors unlocking echoed through the night.
The doors of the Tahoes opened in unison.
From the vehicles emerged twenty-two men and women, all clad in immaculate midnight-blue suits, black shirts, and dark ties. They moved with a terrifying, silent synchronization, their faces impassive, their hands resting comfortably near the tactical holsters concealed beneath their jackets.
Agent Vance, the leader of the detail, stepped out of the lead vehicle. He walked directly toward Evelyn, completely ignoring the trembling, wide-eyed police officer standing just feet away.
"Miss Carter," Vance said, his voice crisp, professional, and carrying clearly over the idling engines. "We received the kinetic impact alert from Asset Alpha. Are you injured, ma'am?"
Evelyn adjusted the strap of her handbag. "I am perfectly fine, Vance. The seatbelt did its job."
