Miller's face turned purple. "That's it. Stand up! You're under arrest!"
Chapter 8: The Ultimatum
"On what charge?" Valerie demanded, finally standing up. When she stood, she squared her shoulders, her posture radiating an intense, undeniable authority.
"Obstruction of justice! Put your hands behind your back!" Miller barked, pulling his handcuffs fully from their pouch.
"Obstruction requires a lawful underlying order," Valerie countered, her voice ringing out clearly into the night air so that any listening neighbors could hear. "You cannot lawfully order me to identify myself on my own property without reasonable suspicion of a crime. Therefore, there is no obstruction. What you are attempting is a false arrest, a violation of my civil rights under Section 1983, and battery under color of law."
Davis hesitated, taking a half-step back. The woman was citing federal statutes with the rapid-fire precision of a law professor. "Miller, wait..." Davis murmured.
"Shut up, Davis. I'm taking her in," Miller snapped. He reached out and aggressively grabbed Valerie's left wrist.
Valerie did not pull away. She knew better than to give them an excuse to claim she was resisting physically. She let her arm go limp, locking eyes with Miller.
"You have just initiated physical contact in an unlawful arrest," Valerie said, her voice dropping to a deadly whisper. "Your career ends tonight, Officer Miller."
Chapter 9: The Detainment
Miller violently twisted her arm behind her back, though she offered no resistance. He clamped one of the steel cuffs around her wrist, clicking it tight.
"Give me your other hand!" Miller yelled.
"Officer Davis," Valerie said, ignoring Miller entirely, speaking clearly over her shoulder. "On the glass table next to my chair, there is a small black leather wallet. Before your partner secures the second handcuff and finalizes this catastrophic mistake, I want you to open it and look at the ID inside."
"Don't listen to her, Davis, help me secure her!" Miller struggled, though Valerie wasn't fighting. He was just trying to force her into a bent position to establish dominance.
Davis stood frozen. His instincts were screaming at him that something was terribly wrong. The woman's absolute lack of panic, her precise legal vocabulary, her unshakeable confidence... this wasn't how criminals acted.
"Look at the wallet, Davis," Valerie commanded, her voice suddenly echoing with the practiced authority of a courtroom prosecutor. It wasn't a request; it was a directive from a superior.
Compelled by her tone, Davis reached out and picked up the small black leather case from the glass table.
Chapter 10: The Wallet on the Table
"Davis, what are you doing? Get over here!" Miller grunted.
Davis ignored him. His hands were trembling slightly as he flipped the leather wallet open.
Inside, there was no driver's license in the window. Instead, there was a heavy, gleaming gold shield pinned to the leather. Above the shield, an official identification card was encased in clear plastic. The Great Seal of the United States was emblazoned in the background.
Davis's eyes scanned the text. Department of Justice. United States Attorney. Valerie Vance.
Davis felt the blood drain completely from his face, pooling in his boots. The world around him seemed to stop spinning. He wasn't looking at a trespasser. He wasn't looking at a burglar.
He was holding the federal credentials of the most powerful law enforcement officer in their half of the state. The woman they were currently manhandling had the power to indict police departments, launch federal probes, and send corrupt cops to federal prison.
