Hale was arrested.

But before he was taken away, he looked at Cody.

"You think you're a hero?"

Cody shook his head.

"No."

"Then what are you?"

Cody looked toward Sombra.

"Just a man who decided not to look away."

Red Creek Changes

When Cody returned to Red Creek, the town was different.

People knew what had happened.

The story spread quickly.

The stranger who rode into the Red Mountains.

The man who recovered two hundred stolen horses.

The man who stopped Victor Hale.

But Cody did not want praise.

He entered the general store.

The fat man from the square was standing behind the counter.

He looked embarrassed.

"I owe you an apology."

Cody said nothing.

"I was wrong."

Cody nodded.

The old man who had given him the direction to the mountains entered.

"You did what none of us were willing to do."

Cody smiled faintly.

"Maybe next time, you won't wait for a stranger."

The old man laughed.

"Maybe."

Outside, Elena waited beside Sombra.

Cody walked toward her.

"You coming?"

She smiled.

"Where?"

"Home."

She looked surprised.

"You call Red Creek home?"

Cody shook his head.

"No."

He looked west.

"Your village."

The Cabin in the Desert

Cody returned to his cabin with Elena.

For the first time in years, the small place did not feel empty.

Elena hung blankets near the window.

She repaired a broken chair.

Cody built a second bed.

They worked without speaking much.

But silence was different now.

It no longer felt like loneliness.

One evening, Elena asked:

"Why did you live alone?"

Cody stared into the fire.

"My father died because nobody helped him."

Elena waited.

"He was injured during a cattle raid. We were stranded. Men rode past us."

He looked down.

"They saw him."

"And they did nothing?"

Cody nodded.

"That was the day I stopped trusting people."

Elena took his hand.

"You trusted me."

Cody looked at her.

"Eventually."

She smiled.

"That's enough."

Outside, Sombra stood beneath the stars.

The desert wind moved softly across the land.

For the first time, Cody felt that his life was beginning rather than ending.

A New Threat

Winter came early.

Snow covered the northern mountains.

The Apache village survived because the horses had been recovered.

But one morning, a rider arrived at Cody's cabin.

He carried a letter.

The message was short.

Victor Hale had escaped.

Cody read it twice.

Elena's face became pale.

"Where?"

"South."

She reached for her rifle.

Cody stopped her.

"No."

"He'll come for us."

"Maybe."

"Then we should leave."

Cody looked toward the horizon.

"No."

"Why?"

"Because I've spent half my life running from men like him."

He folded the letter.

"I'm done running."

They gathered their supplies.

By sunset, they were riding toward Red Creek.

This time, Cody was not alone.

The Final Stand

Hale attacked at dawn.

His men entered Red Creek from three directions.

But Cody had prepared.

The sheriff had warned the townspeople.

The Apache warriors had taken positions on the hills.

Cody stood in the center of the street.

Hale rode forward.

"You should have stayed in your cabin."

Cody raised his rifle.

"You should have stayed in prison."

Hale laughed.

Then the shooting began.

Dust filled the street.

Windows shattered.

Horses screamed.

Cody moved between buildings, firing only when necessary.

Elena protected the civilians.

Tomas led the Apache warriors from the eastern ridge.

The battle lasted less than twenty minutes.

Hale's men surrendered.

But Hale himself escaped into the alley.

Cody followed.

They reached the edge of town.

Hale turned.
