"Your father buried someone here."

Cole's face changed.

For years, he had heard stories about his father.

Most were good.

Samuel Mercer had been known as an honest rancher.

A difficult man, certainly.

Stubborn.

Quiet.

But honest.

He had never been accused of murder.

Cole took one step toward her.

"Be careful."

Clara did not move.

"I am."

"My father never killed anyone."

"I didn't say he did."

"Then what exactly are you saying?"

"Someone died."

Cole looked at the floor.

"How do you know?"

"Because my mother told me."

He stared at her.

"Your mother knew my father?"

"She did."

"What was her name?"

"Rose Bell."

The name struck him with unexpected force.

He remembered it.

Not clearly.

But enough.

A woman who had worked at the old trading post.

A woman who had disappeared from the valley when Cole was young.

His father had once mentioned her.

Only once.

And when Cole had asked who she was, Samuel had said:

"Someone who deserved better than this place."

Cole had never understood what he meant.

Until now.

Clara walked toward the center of the cabin.

She knelt.

"Look closely."

Cole crouched.

The boards were old, but one section was slightly different.

The nails were newer.

Not new.

Just newer than the surrounding ones.

He touched one.

His father's hammer had left distinctive marks on old nails.

Cole recognized them.

"He repaired this."

"No."

Clara shook her head.

"He covered it."

Cole stood.

"Why?"

"I don't know."

"Then how do you know there is something underneath?"

Clara reached into her coat.

She pulled out a folded piece of paper.

"My mother left this for me."

Cole opened it.

The handwriting was faded.

He read the first line.

Samuel, if anything happens to me, do not let them find the ledger.

Cole looked up.

"Who are 'they'?"

Clara shook her head.

"I don't know."

"What ledger?"

"That's what I've been trying to find."

Cole looked at the floor again.

Then at the woman standing across from him.

He had ridden into the forest looking for three missing cattle.

He had found a stranger living in his father's abandoned cabin.

And now she was telling him his father had hidden something beneath the floor.

For the first time in years, Cole wondered whether he had ever really known Samuel Mercer.

He picked up the old iron crowbar leaning against the wall.

"Move."

Clara stepped aside.

Cole drove the crowbar beneath the first board.

The wood groaned.

He pulled.

The board lifted.

Dust rose into the air.

Beneath it was darkness.

He removed another.

Then another.

There was no body.

No bones.

No grave.

Instead, they found a shallow cavity reinforced with stones.

And inside it sat a wooden box.

Cole reached down.

The box was heavier than it looked.

He placed it on the table.

Clara stood beside him.

Neither spoke.

The lock had long since rusted away.

Cole opened it.

Inside were letters.

A ledger.

Two photographs.

And a silver pocket watch.

Cole picked up the photograph.

Three men stood beside a wagon.

His father was one of them.

The second man was unfamiliar.

The third made Clara gasp.

"That's my mother."

Cole looked closer.

Rose Bell stood beside the two men.

She looked young.

Happy.

And beside her was Samuel.

But there was something strange.

On the back of the photograph were four words.

We were betrayed by our own.

Cole read them twice.

Then he opened the ledger.

The first page contained a list of names.

The second contained dates.

The third contained numbers.

And on the fourth page, written in his father's unmistakable handwriting, were the words:

The land was stolen.

Cole looked at Clara.

"What land?"

She shook her head.

"I don't know."
