Derek attacked.

Angela moved.

He threw a combination.

She blocked the first strike.

Redirected the second.

Stepped outside the third.

Derek tried to grab her.

Angela turned.

Suddenly Derek was facing the wrong direction.

He recovered.

The audience murmured.

Derek attacked again.

Faster.

Angela stepped inside.

Her palm touched his chest.

She could have struck.

Instead, she pushed him off balance.

Derek stumbled.

He recovered before falling.

His face turned red.

"Again."

Angela nodded.

This time Derek charged.

Angela waited.

At the final moment, she moved.

Her hand caught his wrist.

Her other arm controlled his elbow.

She rotated.

Derek's body followed.

A second later, he was on the mat.

Angela released him immediately.

She stepped back.

Derek stared upward.

The room was silent.

Angela extended a hand.

"Are you okay?"

Derek ignored it.

He stood by himself.

"That was luck."

Angela nodded.

"Maybe."

Someone near the mirrors whispered,

"She just threw Derek."

Another voice answered,

"She barely touched him."

Derek heard both.

His jaw tightened.

Angela walked away.

She thought the moment was over.

It wasn't.

For Derek, it had just begun.

What the Belt Meant

The next morning, Tyler received a message.

I want her gone.

It was from Derek.

Tyler stared at the screen.

Then he typed:

Why?

The reply came immediately.

She doesn't respect the gym.

Tyler frowned.

Angela had been one of the most respectful students he'd ever had.

She arrived early.

Cleaned her space.

Helped beginners.

Never interrupted.

Never bragged.

Never complained.

Tyler replied:

What exactly did she do?

Derek didn't answer.

Instead, he arrived at the gym that afternoon with Marcus.

They were discussing Angela when she entered.

She heard her name.

Neither man noticed.

Angela stopped near the doorway.

Marcus said,

"She embarrassed him."

Derek replied,

"She got lucky."

Marcus shook his head.

"I've seen lucky before. That wasn't lucky."

"Stay out of it."

"You're making this bigger than it is."

Derek looked at him.

"She needs to learn her place."

Angela quietly walked past them.

Tyler saw her.

Their eyes met.

She gave him a small nod.

He nodded back.

That evening, after class, Tyler approached her.

"You okay?"

Angela packed her bag.

"I'm fine."

"Derek's been upset."

"I know."

"He thinks you challenged him."

Angela smiled.

"I didn't."

"I know."

She zipped the bag.

Tyler hesitated.

"Angela, I want to ask you something."

"Go ahead."

"What exactly did you train?"

Angela looked at the mat.

"Several things."

"Which ones?"

She smiled.

"Too many to explain tonight."

Tyler laughed.

"Fair."

Then Angela opened her bag.

She removed something.

A faded black belt.

Tyler froze.

The belt was old.

The fabric was worn.

There were no flashy embroidered names.

Only a small stitched emblem near one end.

Tyler stared.

"That's yours?"

Angela nodded.

"Yes."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"You didn't ask."

Tyler took a breath.

"What rank?"

Angela folded the belt again.

"I don't use it anymore."

"Angela."

She looked at him.

"Five years ago, my instructor passed away."

Tyler said nothing.

"After that, I stopped."

"Who was your instructor?"

"Kenji Watanabe."

Tyler's eyes widened.

He knew the name.

Anyone serious about martial arts knew it.

Watanabe had trained fighters across several disciplines.

He was famous for refusing to teach people who wanted fame.

Tyler looked at the belt again.

"How long?"

Angela answered quietly.

"Twenty-three years."

Tyler stared.

"And you just walked in here like a beginner?"

"I wanted to start again."

"Why?"

Angela smiled.

"Because I missed it."

Tyler understood.

But before he could respond, Derek entered.

He saw the belt in Angela's hands.

"What is that?"

Angela looked up.

"My belt."

Derek laughed.

"You've got to be kidding."

Angela didn't answer.

Derek stepped closer.

"You're telling me you're some kind of master?"

"No."

"Then what?"

Angela placed the belt back into her bag.

"I'm Angela."

Derek shook his head.

"That's not an answer."

"It is for me."

He walked away.

But the story spread quickly.

By the following week, everyone at Iron Ridge knew.

Angela had trained for decades.

Nobody knew exactly where.

Nobody knew what rank she had achieved.

Nobody knew why she had stopped.

And because people hate unanswered questions, rumors began filling the empty spaces.

Some said she had been a champion.

Some said she had fought professionally.

Some said she had trained military personnel.

Angela confirmed none of it.

She simply kept training.

And that made Derek even more determined to expose her.

 The Challenge

The challenge came on Saturday.

There were thirty people inside Iron Ridge.

Derek stood in the center of the mat.

Angela was helping Lisa stretch.

Derek called out,

"Angela."

She looked up.

"Yes?"

"Come here."

She stood.

"What do you need?"

Derek smiled.

"One round."

"No."

The room became quiet.

Derek's smile disappeared.

"Why?"

"Because I don't want to."

"You've been training here for a month."

"Yes."

"You've embarrassed me twice."

"I didn't mean to."

"Then prove it."

Angela shook her head.

"Prove what?"

"That you belong here."

Tyler stepped forward.

"Derek, stop."

Derek ignored him.

He looked at Angela.

"You said your belt doesn't matter."

"It doesn't."

"Then put it away."

Angela's eyes narrowed slightly.

Derek continued.

"Fight me without it."

Angela understood.

He wasn't challenging her skill.

He was challenging her identity.

She looked around.

Thirty faces.

Some curious.

Some nervous.

Some excited.

Lisa whispered,

"You don't have to."

Angela nodded.

"I know."

Then she stepped onto the mat.

Derek smiled.
