At 2:17 in the morning, Daniel Mercer woke to the sound of water moving.

Not the soft ripple caused by wind.

Not the automatic pool filter.

Something heavier.

Someone was in his backyard.

Daniel sat upright in bed.

For three seconds, he listened.

Then he heard the unmistakable splash of a body entering the pool.

His first thought was that someone had broken into the house.

His second was that he had better not go outside.

For six months, Daniel had lived under constant pressure from the Oakridge Estates Homeowners Association. The association had complained about everything from the height of his mailbox to the color of his garage door. They had sent violation notices because his trash bin remained outside for twenty minutes too long. They had threatened fines because his daughter had left a bicycle beside the driveway.

But this was different.

Daniel quietly reached for his phone.

Before he called the police, he opened the security application connected to the cameras around his property.

Four cameras.

Camera One covered the front porch.

Camera Two watched the driveway.

Camera Three faced the side gate.

Camera Four had a clear view of the swimming pool.

Daniel tapped Camera Four.

His blood ran cold.

A woman stood beside his pool.

She was wearing black athletic clothes and a baseball cap.

In one hand she held a small plastic syringe.

Daniel recognized her immediately.

Victoria Lang.

President of the Oakridge Estates HOA.

For several seconds, Daniel simply stared.

Victoria had climbed over his seven-foot privacy fence.

She had crossed his private yard.

And now she was standing beside his pool at two seventeen in the morning with a syringe.

Daniel zoomed in.

Victoria looked around.

Then she walked to the pool's filtration system.

She crouched beside it.

Daniel grabbed his glasses.

"What are you doing?" he whispered.

Victoria pulled something from her pocket.

A tiny glass vial.

She drew liquid from it into the syringe.

Then she walked toward the water.

Daniel immediately called 911.

"My name is Daniel Mercer," he said quietly. "Someone has broken into my property."

The dispatcher asked whether he knew the person.

Daniel looked at the screen.

"I know her."

"Who is she?"

"Victoria Lang. She's the president of our HOA."

There was a pause.

"Is she armed?"

Daniel looked again.

"I don't know."

Then Victoria did something that made his stomach tighten.

She held the syringe above the pool.

And pushed the plunger.

A thin stream disappeared into the water.

Daniel's hand tightened around the phone.

"She's putting something in my pool."

The dispatcher told him officers were on their way.

But Daniel wasn't watching the police tracker.

He was watching Camera Four.

Victoria walked away from the pool.

She stopped.

Slowly, she turned toward the camera.

For a moment, Daniel wondered if she knew it was there.

Then she smiled.

Not nervously.

Not accidentally.

She smiled as if she knew exactly what she was doing.

And Daniel realized something terrifying.

She hadn't come there to hide.

She had come there expecting to be caught.

The police arrived eight minutes later.

Two patrol cars stopped outside Daniel's house.

Victoria was still inside the backyard.

She had apparently decided to leave through the same fence she had climbed over.

She didn't make it.

One officer ordered her to step away from the fence.

Victoria immediately changed her expression.

The confident woman from the camera disappeared.

She became frightened.

"I was worried about the pool," she said.

The officer frowned.

"Your pool?"

"No. His."

She pointed toward Daniel's house.

"I received a report that the water was contaminated."

Daniel stepped outside.

"You climbed my fence because you received a report?"

Victoria nodded.

"Yes."

"At two in the morning?"

"It was urgent."

Daniel stared at her.

"Then why did you bring a syringe?"

Victoria's face hardened.

"I didn't."

Daniel turned toward the officer.

"Camera Four."

The officer asked to see it.

Daniel unlocked his phone.

The footage showed everything.

Victoria entering.

Victoria approaching the filtration system.

Victoria opening the vial.

Victoria filling the syringe.

Victoria injecting something into the pool.

There was no ambiguity.

Victoria watched the footage.

Her face went pale.

Then she smiled again.

"That's not what it looks like."

The officer looked at her.

"What does it look like?"

Victoria didn't answer.

Daniel did.

"It looks like someone broke into my property and put something into my swimming pool."

Victoria suddenly became angry.

"You have no idea what you're dealing with."

Daniel raised an eyebrow.

"I know what I'm dealing with."

"No," she said. "You don't."

One of the officers asked Victoria where she got the vial.

She hesitated.

Then she said the words that changed everything.

"From the association's environmental consultant."

Daniel froze.

"The HOA has an environmental consultant?"

Victoria nodded.

"Yes."

"Since when?"

"Three weeks."

Daniel looked at the officers.

"Why wasn't anyone informed?"

Victoria said nothing.

The officer asked for the consultant's name.

Victoria gave it.

Dr. Leonard Price.

Daniel had never heard of him.

But there was something else.

The officer asked Victoria whether she had documentation authorizing her to enter the property.

Victoria reached into her jacket.

"I have an emergency authorization."

She produced a printed document.

Daniel took one look.

His heart sank.

It carried the Oakridge Estates HOA seal.

And beneath it was his address.

But Daniel knew something Victoria didn't.
