Evan lowered the phone after giving the dispatcher the final details. He finally looked at Sabrina, his dark eyes hollow, stripped of every ounce of warmth he had ever offered her.

"Not anymore," he said simply.

The silence that followed was absolute.

Sabrina staggered back as if she had been the one hit with the stick. "You're throwing away two years... for her? For a woman who lied to you every single day of your life for four years?"

"I am protecting a victim of domestic violence in my home," Evan replied, his tone chillingly formal. "And I am protecting my daughter. You will stand by the front door. You will not approach Leah. You will not approach Ellie. If you take one step toward either of them before the officers arrive, I will physically restrain you myself."

Leah reached out a shaking hand, her fingers lightly brushing Evanโ€™s ankle. "Evan... please. No police. Please, the press... your firm... if this gets outโ€”"

"Let it," Evan said softly, kneeling down again so he could look Leah in the eye while keeping Ellie tucked safely against his ribcage. "Let the whole world know. I don't care about the firm, Leah. I care that you're bleeding under your skin, and I care that my daughter is terrified."
