Jack felt sick.

But there was one name at the bottom.

A federal investigator.

Someone who had been helping Daniel.

Someone who could bring everything into the light.

Jack understood.

Daniel hadn't been trying to destroy the people who betrayed him.

He had been building a case.

A case that could bring down everyone.

Then he had disappeared before he could finish.

Jack looked at Emma.

"We're going to Route 17."

They rode through the night.

Seven motorcycles.

Jack led.

Emma rode in Marcus's truck between the bikes.

The road stretched beneath them.

The moon hung low.

For the first time in eleven years, Jack felt like he was riding with Daniel again.

Same highway.

Same wind.

Same uncertainty.

But this time he had something Daniel didn't.

Time.

Near the old church, they saw a single light.

A man stood outside.

Father Elias.

He was nearly seventy.

He looked at Jack.

Then at Emma.

His face broke.

"Daniel's girl."

Emma stepped forward.

"You knew my dad?"

The priest nodded.

"He came here the night before he disappeared."

"Where is he?"

The priest looked away.

"I don't know."

Emma's face fell.

"But he left something."

Father Elias led them inside.

Beneath the altar was a wooden box.

Inside was a letter.

And a small silver necklace.

Emma recognized it immediately.

"That's Mom's."

Father Elias nodded.

"Your father gave it to me."

Jack opened the letter.

This time Daniel's words were addressed to Emma.

My little girl,

If you ever read this, I'm sorry I wasn't there to watch you grow up.

I want you to know something. None of this was your fault.

I left because people were coming for you.

I thought disappearing was the only way to keep you alive.

Jack stopped reading.

Emma reached for the letter.

She read it herself.

Tears rolled down her cheeks.

Daniel had written about her first birthday.

Her mother's laugh.

The stuffed rabbit he had bought before she was born.

The tiny red shoes he had kept in his truck.

He had remembered everything.

Every detail.

Then came the final paragraph.

If the man with the tattoo ever finds you, trust him.

Jack Mercer is the only man I know who would walk into hell for someone he loves.

Jack stared at those words.

He had spent eleven years believing he had failed Daniel.

Now he realized Daniel had never stopped trusting him.

The church doors opened.

Thomas stood outside.

But this time he was alone.

Jack stepped forward.

Thomas looked exhausted.

"It's over."

Jack shook his head.

"No."

He held up the documents.

"It starts tonight."

Thomas's face hardened.

"You don't understand who you're fighting."

Jack looked at Emma.

Then at the men behind him.

"Neither did you."

Thomas reached inside his coat.

Jack moved instantly.

But Thomas didn't pull a weapon.

He pulled out a photograph.

A photograph of Daniel.

Alive.

Older.

Standing beside a car.

Jack stared.

"When was this taken?"

Thomas smiled.

"Three months ago."

Emma gasped.

Jack stepped forward.

"Where is he?"

Thomas's smile vanished.

"That is the question you should have been asking."

The Man She Was Looking For

The photograph changed everything.

Daniel Carter might still be alive.

For eleven years, Jack had believed his friend was dead.

Now he had proof that belief might have been wrong.

The photograph had been taken three months earlier.

A gas station in Colorado.

Daniel stood beside a dark sedan.

Older.

Thinner.

But unmistakably Daniel.

Jack stared at the image.

"Where?"

Thomas said nothing.

Jack grabbed his collar.

"Where is he?"

Thomas looked toward Emma.

"You're too late."

Jack's expression hardened.

"What does that mean?"

"He was moved."

"By whom?"

Thomas hesitated.

Then a voice came from behind them.

"By me."

Everyone turned.

A black SUV had pulled into the church parking lot.

A woman stepped out.

Emma screamed.

"Mom!"

The woman ran toward her.

Emma threw herself into her mother's arms.

Jack stood frozen.

Daniel's wife was alive.

Bruised.

Exhausted.

But alive.

She held Emma so tightly it looked as if she would never let go.

Jack approached carefully.

"Mrs. Carter."

She looked at him.

"You found her."

Jack nodded.

"She found me."

The woman smiled through tears.

"I knew she would."

Jack looked at Thomas.

Then back at her.

"What happened to Daniel?"

Her smile disappeared.

"He survived."

Jack's heart stopped.

"Where is he?"

She looked toward the road.

"He's been in hiding."

"Why?"

"Because the people behind Vance are still powerful."

Jack looked at Thomas.

Thomas lowered his head.

For the first time, the powerful county commissioner looked small.

The authorities arrived twenty minutes later.

The evidence was transferred.

The names were exposed.

The corruption that had poisoned the county for more than a decade finally began to unravel.

Thomas Vance was arrested.

Others followed.

Some disappeared before they could be questioned.

Some tried to deny everything.

But Daniel's records were too complete.

His evidence had survived.

His voice had survived.

His story had survived.
