Slamming his gavel down with violent, repetitive force, the judge bellowed over the uproar, “Sit down, Mr. Vale! Order in this courtroom or I will have you removed by federal marshals!” Richard slowly, rigidly lowered himself back into his seat, his hands gripping the edge of the defense table so tightly that his knuckles turned chalk-white, but for the first time since he had entered the courtroom that morning, naked fear had appeared in his eyes. The judge turned his attention back toward Emily, his voice gentle and protective. “Sweetheart… who is the man under the house? Can you tell us where he is?” The little girl stared down at the floor, watching the wet drops falling from her raincoat onto the tiles, before whispering something so quietly that the front row of reporters had to lean forward to catch the syllables. “He cries at night.” A palpable chill swept across the courtroom, raising goosebumps on the arms of the spectators as the horrifying implication of the words settled over them like a shroud of ice. Her mother suddenly collapsed forward against the defense table, bursting into uncontrollable, ragged sobs of absolute despair. “No… no, God help me, I didn't know…” she wept into her arms. Without a moment's hesitation, the judge ordered the bailiffs forward with a sharp wave of his hand. “Seal the Vale property immediately! Deploy every available unit to the estate on the northern cliffs. Nobody enters, nobody leaves, and nobody touches the lower levels!” Richard lunged to his feet a second time, his face contorted in rage. “You have no right to search my private residence on the word of a hysterical child—!” “Enough!” the judge thundered, his voice cutting through Richard’s protest like a butcher’s knife.

But Emily wasn't looking at Richard anymore; her attention had snapped toward the massive oak courtroom doors at the back of the gallery. At first, none of the spectators or lawyers understood why the child had turned away from the dramatic confrontation, assuming it was simply the erratic behavior of a frightened minor. Then, floating faintly through the heavy wood and soundproof insulation of the doors, everyone heard it. A sound. Weak, distant, and agonizingly slow. Metal banging against concrete somewhere far outside in the corridor of the courthouse hallway. Once. Twice. Then again, followed by the faint, muffled scrape of boots dragging across the floor. The bailiffs stationed near the heavy entrance exchanged deeply uneasy glances, their hands instinctively dropping toward the holsters at their hips. One of them slowly reached out, unlatched the brass handle, and pulled the courtroom entrance ajar. And instantly—a terrified, out-of-breath security guard stumbled through the opening, his uniform disheveled, his face completely bloodless, and his hands shaking so violently he could barely keep his balance. “Your Honor...” the guard gasped, choking on his own adrenaline as the entire room turned toward him in collective horror. The guard leaned against the doorframe, struggling desperately to draw enough oxygen into his lungs to speak. “We... we found it. We breached the perimeter doors at the Vale mansion just like you ordered... we found a hidden room beneath the sub-basement.”
