He wasn't simply rude.

He was trying to establish control.

"How much of Pinnacle Tower do they want?"

"Enough to force a sale."

Benjamin was silent.

Daniel continued.

"Benjamin, there is more."

"What?"

"They've been approaching some of the minority investors."

"How many?"

"Enough."

Benjamin looked down at the city.

For decades, Pinnacle Tower had survived recessions, market crashes, construction failures, and ownership changes.

But now someone was trying to take it from the inside.

"Send me everything."

"You'll get it."

"And Daniel?"

"Yes?"

"Don't tell anyone I'm the controlling shareholder."

Daniel smiled.

"I wasn't planning to."

Benjamin ended the call.

He walked downstairs.

By nine o'clock, he was back in his gray uniform.

He pushed his cart through the lobby.

Craig saw him.

Their eyes met.

Craig smiled.

"You still work here?"

Benjamin nodded.

"For now."

Craig laughed.

"Not for long."

Benjamin continued walking.

Craig didn't notice the small smile that appeared on Benjamin's face.

Because Benjamin knew something Craig didn't.

The man Craig had just threatened was not his employee.

He was his employer.

What the Cameras Saw

On Monday morning, rumors spread through Pinnacle Tower.

Someone had posted a short video from the gala.

It showed Craig throwing the plate.

It showed Benjamin standing silently.

It showed Tiffany laughing.

The video spread quickly.

By lunchtime, employees were whispering about it.

By evening, it had reached social media.

By Tuesday, local news stations had picked it up.

Craig was furious.

"Who recorded that?"

Nobody answered.

Tiffany tried to calm him.

"It's just a janitor."

Craig slammed his hand onto the desk.

"It isn't about the janitor!"

He was right.

It wasn't.

It was about what the video represented.

A wealthy foundation hosting a charity gala while one of its own workers was humiliated.

People began asking questions.

What kind of organization was Sterling Foundation?

Why was a janitor treated that way?

Who was Craig Holloway?

And why had nobody stopped him?

The foundation's board demanded an internal investigation.

Craig blamed the catering company.

The catering company blamed event management.

Event management blamed a communication error.

Everyone tried to find someone else to carry the blame.

Benjamin said nothing.

Instead, he kept working.

One afternoon, he found a young receptionist crying near the freight elevator.

Her name was Emily.

She had been told her position might be eliminated.

Benjamin handed her a clean tissue.

"Don't panic."

"They're cutting staff."

"Have you finished your nursing classes?"

Emily looked surprised.

"How do you know about that?"

"You told me six months ago."

"I didn't think you remembered."

"I remember."

She wiped her eyes.

"What should I do?"

"Keep studying."

"What if I lose my job?"

"Then you'll find another."

She looked at him.

"You make everything sound simple."

Benjamin smiled.

"Nothing is simple. But panic never makes it easier."

That evening, Emily discovered something unusual.

Her tuition bill had been paid.

An anonymous donor had covered her final semester.

She never knew who had done it.

Benjamin never told her.

Meanwhile, Daniel Mercer continued investigating Northstar.

He discovered forged signatures.

Inflated valuations.

Hidden debt.

And one particularly dangerous document.

A purchase agreement.

Northstar intended to acquire enough shares of Pinnacle Tower to force a sale.

But there was a problem.

The controlling shares were held by a private entity.

And the entity was owned by Benjamin Anderson.

Daniel called him.

"We need to move."

Benjamin sat quietly in his small apartment.

"How bad?"

"Bad enough."

"Then let's finish it."

"Are you sure?"

Benjamin looked at an old photograph of Evelyn.

"Yes."

Daniel sighed.

"Then I will prepare everything."

Benjamin stood.

"For thirty years, I watched people build this tower."

He looked out at the Chicago skyline.

"I won't let someone tear it apart for a quick profit."

The Truth Comes Upstairs

Three days later, Pinnacle Tower's board assembled for an emergency meeting.

Craig arrived first.

He wore an expensive suit.

Tiffany sat beside him.

Victor Holloway joined by video conference.

The meeting began.

Victor spoke confidently.

"Northstar is prepared to make a generous offer."
