Marcus reacted.

One movement.

One throw.

The soldier hit the ground badly.

He survived.

But Marcus never forgot the sound.

After that, he left.

Years later, he had found ordinary work.

Then he found Apex.

He liked the gym.

It reminded him of something he had once loved without the darkness attached to it.

Fighters trained because they wanted to become better.

Children learned discipline.

Adults found confidence.

It was a place where violence could be controlled.

Marcus wanted to keep it that way.

But Ethan didn't understand.

The next morning, Ethan arrived early.

Marcus was already cleaning.

Ethan stood nearby for several minutes before speaking.

"Teach me."

Marcus stopped.

"No."

"Why?"

"Because you're still angry."

"I can control it."

"No."

Ethan frowned.

"You don't know me."

"I know fighters."

Marcus continued mopping.

Ethan followed.

"Then test me."

Marcus stopped.

He looked directly at him.

"All right."

Ethan straightened.

Marcus pointed toward the heavy bag.

"Hit it."

Ethan punched.

"Again."

Ethan punched.

"Again."

Ethan continued.

After twenty punches, Marcus said:

"You're breathing too fast."

Ethan slowed.

"Better."

Marcus walked around him.

"You chase power."

Ethan said nothing.

"You want every strike to hurt."

Still silence.

"That's why you telegraph."

Ethan looked at him.

"Show me."

Marcus raised his hand.

"Punch me."

Ethan hesitated.

Marcus nodded.

Ethan threw a jab.

Marcus caught it.

"Again."

Cross.

Caught.

Hook.

Avoided.

Kick.

Checked.

Ethan stopped.

Marcus said:

"You don't need more power."

"What do I need?"

"Patience."

Ethan looked away.

For the first time, Marcus saw something behind the arrogance.

A fighter who was afraid.

Not of losing.

Of becoming ordinary.

 The Visitor

Three days later, Apex hosted an open sparring session.

Several fighters from neighboring gyms arrived.

Among them was Caleb Rourke.

Caleb was twenty-nine.

Undefeated as a professional.

Known for aggressive pressure fighting.

He had been invited by Victor as a possible training partner for Ethan.

Caleb walked into Apex like he owned it.

He looked around.

"Nice place."

Victor greeted him.

"Good to have you."

Caleb smiled.

Then he noticed Marcus mopping near the entrance.

"Who's that?"

"Marcus."

"Staff?"

"Janitor."

Caleb nodded.

"Got it."

Marcus kept working.

Caleb watched him for a moment.

Then laughed.

"Does he fight?"

Ethan was standing nearby.

He looked at Marcus.

Then at Caleb.

"Apparently."

Caleb grinned.

"Seriously?"

Marcus didn't respond.

Caleb walked over.

"You train here?"

"I work here."

"Same thing?"

"No."

Caleb laughed.

"I like you."

Marcus smiled faintly.

"You shouldn't."

The sparring session began.

Caleb destroyed his first partner.

He was fast.

Powerful.

Aggressive.

The gym reacted with every combination.

Ethan watched carefully.

Marcus continued cleaning.

After several rounds, Caleb looked toward him.

"You've been watching."

Marcus nodded.

"What do you think?"

Marcus shrugged.

"You're strong."

Caleb laughed.

"That's it?"

"Yes."

"Nothing else?"

Marcus looked at him.

"You overcommit."

Caleb's smile faded.

Ethan looked over.

Caleb stepped closer.

"Say that again."

"You overcommit."

"Want to prove it?"

Marcus shook his head.

"No."

Caleb laughed.

"Everyone here seems to be scared of fighting you."

Marcus looked at him.

"No."

"Then fight."

Marcus shook his head.

"You're not listening."

Caleb stepped onto the mat.

"One minute."

The same words.

Marcus sighed.

The room gathered around them.

Victor started to object.

Marcus raised a hand.

"It's fine."

He stepped onto the mat.

Caleb smiled.

"Don't worry. I won't hurt you."

Marcus looked at him.

"That's not what I'm worried about."

Caleb attacked.

Fast.

Faster than Ethan.

His first punch nearly touched Marcus.

Marcus moved.

Caleb followed.

Combination.

Kick.

Clinch.

Marcus avoided everything.

Then Caleb rushed forward with a double-leg takedown.

Marcus pivoted.

Caleb missed.

One finger touched the center of his chest.

Caleb's momentum carried him forward.

Marcus turned.

Caleb crashed to his knees.

Silence.

Marcus released him immediately.

Caleb stared upward.

Nobody laughed.

Marcus stepped away.

Caleb slowly stood.

"What are you?"

Marcus looked at him.

"Old."

Then he walked off the mat.

The Challenge Becomes Personal

Caleb didn't leave.

He stayed in the locker room for almost an hour.

When he finally came out, his expression had changed.

He wasn't amused anymore.

He was obsessed.

"You embarrassed me."

Marcus looked at him.

"No."

"You put me on the floor."

"Because you charged."

"You think you're better than me?"

"No."

"Then prove it."

Marcus sighed.

"Why?"

"Because I need to know."

Marcus stared at him.

"That's your problem."

Caleb stepped forward.

"I've beaten everyone here."

Ethan interrupted.

"Caleb."

"What?"

"Stop."

Caleb looked at him.

"You fought him too."

Ethan's jaw tightened.

"Yes."

"And?"

Ethan didn't answer.

Caleb understood.

He looked at Marcus.

"You did the same thing to him."

Marcus said nothing.

Caleb smiled.

"Then maybe you're the problem."

Victor stepped forward.

"This ends now."
