They would erase everyone connected to her.

Including Daniel.

Grim looked toward the horizon.

"How much did your mother tell you?"

"Enough."

"What did she want you to do?"

Daniel touched the pendant.

"Find John Wick."

Grim frowned.

"He's gone."

Daniel shook his head.

"No."

"Daniel."

"My mother said he's alive."

Grim said nothing.

Then Daniel added:

"She said he'd come if I showed him this."

He opened the pendant.

Inside the photograph, behind the image, another message had been written.

Three words.

THE DEBT REMAINS.

Grim stared at it.

For the first time in twenty years, he felt something he had not allowed himself to feel.

Hope.

And fear.

Because if John Wick was aliveβ€”

someone was about to discover exactly how much unfinished business remained.

The Safehouse

The Iron Horse had a safehouse in the mountains.

Nobody called it that.

They called it the cabin.

It was an old hunting lodge surrounded by pine trees and miles of empty forest.

They arrived just after sunrise.

Daniel slept for three hours.

When he woke, Grim was sitting outside.

The old biker was cleaning his revolver.

Daniel approached.

"Can I ask you something?"

"Sure."

"Why did you help him?"

Grim continued cleaning the weapon.

"Because twenty-two years ago, I saw a man who didn't want to kill anyone."

Daniel frowned.

"John Wick?"

"Yes."

"What happened?"

Grim looked into the forest.

"He was trying to leave that life."

Daniel waited.

"He came to me because he needed a motorcycle. He wanted to disappear. I asked why."

"And?"

"He said he was going home."

Daniel smiled faintly.

"Did he make it?"

"For a while."

Grim's expression hardened.

"Then they took the woman he loved."

Daniel looked away.

"My mother said John lost everything."

"He did."

"Then why did he come back?"

"Because sometimes love is the last thing keeping a man from becoming a monster."

Daniel thought about that.

"Do you think he's a monster?"

Grim shook his head.

"No."

"What do you think he is?"

Grim looked at him.

"A man who survived becoming one."

Inside the cabin, a radio suddenly crackled.

Cole's voice came through.

"Grim."

"What?"

"We have movement."

"Where?"

"Two miles south."

Grim stood.

"How many?"

"Hard to tell."

A pause.

Then Cole said:

"There's something else."

"What?"

"They're not coming for us."

Grim looked at Daniel.

"They're coming for the kid."

Daniel's face went pale.

A gunshot echoed from the forest.

Then another.

Grim shouted:

"Everybody inside!"

The cabin erupted into movement.

Windows shattered.

Bullets tore through the walls.

The attackers had surrounded them.

But this time, the Iron Horse was ready.

Grim moved through the house with brutal efficiency.

Cole covered the rear.

Two members fired from upstairs.

Daniel crawled beneath the kitchen table.

Then the shooting stopped.

Again.

Silence.

Grim knew that silence.

It meant someone had entered the perimeter.

Someone who did not need to shoot from a distance.

A shadow appeared outside the broken window.

A man stepped into view.

Black suit.

Long coat.

No weapon visible.

Grim stared.

The stranger looked at Daniel.

Then at the pendant.

And finally at Grim.

"Marcus Hale."

Grim raised his gun.

"You've got ten seconds."

The man smiled.

"I only need five."

He stepped forward.

Then another voice came from the forest.

"You're going to need more than that."

Everyone froze.

A motorcycle engine roared.

One headlight appeared between the trees.

The rider stopped at the edge of the clearing.

He removed his helmet.

Dark hair.

Tired eyes.

A face that seemed older than the photographs.

Daniel stood slowly.

He whispered:

"John."

The man looked at him.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then John Wick said:

"Your mother sent me a message."

Daniel's eyes filled with tears.

"She's dead."

John looked down.

"I know."

John Wick

John entered the cabin.

Nobody lowered their weapons.

John didn't seem to care.

He looked at Grim.

"You got older."

Grim almost smiled.

"So did you."

John glanced at Daniel.

"How long have they been chasing you?"

"Two days."

"Who?"

"The Table."

John nodded.

"How many?"

"Too many."

John looked at the broken windows.

"They'll send more."

Grim stepped closer.

"What did Elena steal?"

John's expression changed.

"Something that was never supposed to exist."

"The ledger?"

John nodded.

"It contains names."

"Whose names?"

"Everyone."

Grim frowned.

"Everyone?"

"Every operative. Every handler. Every financier. Every safehouse. Every child recruitment site."

Daniel stared.

"She told me it could end them."

John looked at him.

"She was right."

Grim studied John.

"Then why are you here?"

John looked at the boy.

"Because Elena asked me to protect him."

Daniel whispered:

"She knew you?"

John nodded.

"Long ago."

"How?"

John remained silent.

Grim understood.

"You loved her."

John didn't answer.

He didn't need to.

Daniel looked shocked.

"My mother knew you before I was born."

"Yes."

"Why didn't she tell me?"

"Because knowing my name could have gotten you killed."

Daniel touched the pendant.

"What is this?"

John reached for it.

Daniel hesitated.

Then handed it over.

John opened it.

His eyes settled on the photograph.

For the first time, the Iron Horse members saw emotion cross his face.

Pain.

Not weakness.

Pain.

"She kept this," he whispered.

"Why?"

"Because it reminded her that I once believed people could escape."

Grim stepped closer.

"And now?"

John closed the pendant.

"Now I know better."

Daniel looked at him.

"Are you going to kill the men chasing me?"

John looked toward the window.

"They won't stop."

"So yes?"

John nodded.

"Yes."

Grim sighed.

"Then we have a problem."

John looked at him.

"The High Table knows about the Iron Horse."

"They already knew."

"They know you helped me."

"They've known for twenty-two years."

John's eyes narrowed.
