And suddenly, Evelyn understood.

Someone was not simply stealing money.

Someone was building a case against her.

---

The discovery changed everything.

Until that moment, Evelyn had believed she was investigating a crime.

Afterward, she realized she might be the intended victim.

She spent the entire weekend inside her office.

The building was almost empty.

Outside, the city continued normally.

People went to restaurants.

Couples walked through parks.

Children played in apartment courtyards.

Nobody knew that inside a glass tower overlooking the city, Evelyn Carter was watching her life begin to collapse.

She found more false authorizations.

More documents with her digital signature.

More payments linked to accounts she had never approved.

The pattern was becoming clear.

The money had been moved through a network of shell companies.

The shell companies had paid contractors.

The contractors had transferred funds to overseas accounts.

Some of those accounts had later invested money into businesses connected to Carter & Vale.

It was complicated.

Deliberately complicated.

Someone had designed the system so that investigators would have to follow dozens of false trails.

But every trail eventually returned to Evelyn.

Her authorization.

Her credentials.

Her computer access.

Her department.

She called Daniel late Sunday night.

He answered immediately.

"Evelyn?"

"We need to meet."

"Now?"

"Now."

Daniel arrived at her apartment forty minutes later.

She had spread documents across the dining table.

Bank records.

Authorization logs.

Email printouts.

Daniel stood silently while she explained.

When she finished, he sat down.

For the first time since the investigation began, he looked genuinely afraid.

"Someone is setting you up."

Evelyn stared at him.

"You think?"

Daniel ran a hand through his hair.

"Who else knows about this?"

"Only you."

"Finance?"

"They know there are discrepancies. They don't know what I found."

Daniel became quiet.

Evelyn watched him.

"What?"

"We need to be careful."

"I am being careful."

"No, I mean very careful."

His voice had changed.

"You can't tell anyone about this."

Evelyn frowned.

"Why?"

"Because if someone inside the company is doing this, they may already know what you've discovered."

"So we call the police."

Daniel immediately looked up.

"No."

The answer came too quickly.

Evelyn noticed.

"Why not?"

"Because once the police enter the company, we lose control."

"We shouldn't have control over a criminal investigation."

Daniel stood.

"You know how the media works. They'll say Carter & Vale is under investigation. Clients will leave. Employees will panic. Investors will pull out."

"Evelyn, we have four hundred people working for us."

She looked at the papers.

"And what about protecting them from whoever is stealing millions?"

Daniel walked closer.

"We'll hire independent investigators first."

He placed a hand on her shoulder.

"Trust me."

For years, those words had meant something.

Trust me.

Daniel had said them when they rented their first office.

Trust me.

He had said them before their first major investor meeting.

Trust me.

He had said them when they took out loans and hired their first employees.

Trust me.

So Evelyn did.

That was her third mistake.

Daniel hired a private investigative firm.

Three weeks later, the company announced an internal audit.

The press learned about it within hours.

Evelyn had no idea how.

Television reporters began appearing outside the building.

Anonymous sources leaked information.

Someone claimed that a senior executive had been under investigation for months.

Someone else said millions had disappeared.

Then came the first article mentioning Evelyn's name.

The headline read:

**CARTER & VALE CO-FOUNDER QUESTIONED IN FINANCIAL IRREGULARITIES.**

Evelyn called Daniel immediately.

"Did you leak this?"

"What? No."

"Then who did?"

"I don't know."

But by the next morning, another article appeared.

This one included information only the executive team should have known.

The article described Evelyn's role in approving charitable donations.

It mentioned her access to financial systems.

It suggested that investigators were focusing on her department.

Evelyn walked into Daniel's office without knocking.

"You need to stop this."

Daniel looked up from behind his desk.

"Stop what?"

"The leaks."

"I'm trying."

"No, you're managing them."

His expression hardened.

"What does that mean?"

"It means the information being released makes me look guilty."

Daniel stood slowly.

"Are you accusing me of something?"

"I'm asking who benefits."

For the first time in their partnership, silence filled the space between them.

Daniel's office overlooked the entire city.

Evelyn suddenly hated the view.

"Be careful," Daniel said quietly.

"About what?"

"About letting paranoia destroy your judgment."

Evelyn stared at him.

Then she left.

That night, she went back to the company's original server room.

Most of Carter & Vale's systems had been modernized years earlier.

But old backup records remained.

Evelyn knew the infrastructure better than anyone.

She spent four hours searching through archived logs.

Finally, she found what she needed.

The false authorizations had not originated from her computer.

They had been created remotely.

The access route had been disguised.

But there was one small error.

A timestamp.

The system showed that one authorization had been created while Evelyn was on a flight to Chicago.

She could prove she had not been anywhere near the company's network.

She checked the access log again.

The authorization came from a private executive terminal.

Only three people had access.

Evelyn.

The chief financial officer.

And Daniel Vale.

Her heart began to pound.

She printed the records.

Then she copied them onto two separate drives.

She placed one inside her apartment safe.

The other she carried with her.

The next morning, the company's security team stopped her at the entrance.

"Ms. Carter," one of them said, "you need to come with us."

"Why?"

"The board has called an emergency meeting."

Evelyn looked past them.

Daniel was standing near the elevator.

He was wearing a dark suit.

His face was expressionless.

And suddenly, Evelyn knew.

The meeting was not about finding the truth.

It was about deciding who would be blamed for it.

---

The boardroom had never felt so cold.

Twelve people sat around the long glass table.

Some had known Evelyn for years.

Some had attended her wedding.

Some had celebrated the company's victories with her.

Now none of them would look directly at her.
